Newbie 5.1 Problems, with Logitech 640 and Turtle Beach Santa Cruz

Hello,
I've finally got my hands on a 5.1 setup, as titled suggested, the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card and Logitech 640 5.1 speakers. I installed and setup everything, change the setting to the 5.1 in the sound card menu, and played a MP3...but the sound only came out from the two front channels. I get 4 channels when I play a video file say Naruto. Is that because those files only have data for so many channels?
Then I tested an APE file, still only two channels of sound. The weird thing though, is that I'm sure there are sounds that are missing, which I guess are suppose to come out from the other channels but don't.
Previously, I used two sets of independent speakers and tried the 4 channel setting with them, and the sounds come out from all 4. Is there anyway to set things up so the sounds come out from all channels despite its not being Dolby or 5.1 or whatever?
Apology for the wordiness, thank you for your help.

If your using Winamp (which you should be) you'll need a 5.1 output plugin for it to work correctly. I recommend KB 5.1 Channel, since it works perfect for me.

Thanks, I'll go fetch that right now. Will report back once I've tried it out.

edit: It works fine now, sound comes out from all channels . I should've done a bit of research before I rushed to get the set. The two uses of 5.1 that I know of so far are:
*games, esp. FPS, that supports 5.1, so you can pinpoint location, etc.
*movies
Are there other advantages of owning a 5.1 set?
Oh and, I tried to play an MP3 file with Windows Media Player 9 (the long-forgotten) and it does 5.1 without plugins. Are there media players designed specifically for this purpose?

i use my Z640s for a few things:

Dual Stereo...there's 2 lefts and 2 rights for things like MP3s

4 Speaker Surround - older EAX games like CS

5.1 Surround
1. DVD movies (DTS and DD)
2. newer EAX games like Halo

that's about all i can think of off the top of my head.

hushypushy: What do you use to listen to MP3s? Same setup with Winamp and the plugin?

i just use Winamp by itself, and i use the KX drivers' (3rd party drivers, not the crapass Creative ones) mixer to duplicate the surround. i've never heard of the 5.1 plugin that bahamut_2006 mentioned

Yeah, Windows Media Player will play surround sound with no problem, but since I hate that thing, I looked for a Winamp plugin since I knew their had to be one. So I found that plugin, tried it out, and it works great for me. I dont see why anyone would use anything besides Winamp unless it was for like DVDs or something.

Generally I'm not a great fan of MS bundled software either. I've been using Winamp almost as long as I've known MP3. In this case though, WMP produces better sound than Winamp with the plugin, the clarity is better.

Well, I finally got 5.1 audio out of my Audigy (I can do the speaker test and "center" is spoken). Previously, the best I could get out of it was 4 channels, because the Audigy digital 5.1 is broken with nobody working on fixing it. Anyways, going analog, I finally get 5.1, so I guess this works. Now I can actually hear what people are saying in games when they're directly in front of me instead of trying to lip-read due to the center channel not functioning .
