bevels and embosses usually... sometimes a solid drop shadow

gradients only make those buttons look like the colours change, they dont make em look like they have depth until theyre bevelled or embossed

gradients... nah they don't have enough control.

I never knew emboss could support more than 2 colours... I'll give it a shot.

embosscan be applied on almost anything. dont see why it wouldnt handle gradients.

ohh and RB, i said gradients because he asked how to make buttons similor to the ones here and i dont think there is any bevel and emboss action going on there

the stand vbulletin buttons have a gradient with the dark color at the bottom, plus they have a one or two pixel 3d border. The border on the top and on the left is very light, and the border on the bottom and on the right is very dark. These borders combined with the gradient give the illusion of 3d.

LOL, You don't have to explain that to me. But Gradients do come in handy. Especially when making metal textures if your not using a pettern. You don't even have to use filters actually. With gradients and opposite colors you can make things look to be beveled.

well, gradients alone still dont make buttons really look like theyre in 3d... bevels are angular cuts in real life, so its pretty safe to assume that if they can make the top view of a block turn into a trapezian prism, they can make a 2d button into a 3d-ish button

Well this is done with a gradient. Looks kinda 3D to me. But the ultimate way is really using the layer styles and filters.

well the gradient alone wouldnt make that effect. the drop shadow and the 1 pixel borders gives it its 3D look

so the conclusion of all this

Gradients can beused to make 3D looking buttons but not alone. (Used with drop shadow or opposite color borders)

And bevel emboss seemsto be the easiest way to make them
