Lightbulb Nero to support double layer DVD+R also Pioneer to produce 50GB Blu-ray

-data-

Karlsbad - Ahead Software announced today what it calls the first all-in-one software suite to write double layer (DL) DVD+R media. Two new technologies will be included in the current OEM release of Nero and will become available within 3 months.

The company claims that its new software will simplify the recording process of DL DVDs which are expected to arrive in the second quarter of this year. A new technology named "LayerMagic" decreases the amount of time required to master a DL DVD by automatically distributing video content equally between the two layers, Ahead said in a statement. Additionally, "SmoothPlay" automatically modifies video content written to the end of the DVD so that delays in playback are reduced.

Ahead will initially only integrate support for 8.5 GByte DVD+R DL media in its OEM release. According to a spokesperson, the software will be bundled with drives of "major manufacturers". The retail version, Nero 6, so far does not offer DL support. "It's just not there yet," according to the spokesperson.

The OEM version will include all previous components of Nero, such as the video capture tool NeroVision Express 2 and BackItUp.

A REPORT IN THE Japanese press said that Pioneer will be able to double Blu-ray optical drives to support 50GB optical disks.

Nikkei.net reports that Pioneer has made the breakthrough by using an electron rather than a laser beam to etch grooves on disks.

The capacity of Blu-ray disks using conventional ultraviolet beams only supports 27GB, the wire said, but Pioneer will supply the technology under licence to other companies to boost that capacity to a massive 50GB.

Meanwhile, Philips is expected to release a dual level DVD-9 writer for around $150 in a few weeks time, according to the New Scientist.

That will allow data to be written to 8.4GB disks, although the media used for the writer will cost quite a bit more than current conventional media

150$ for a DL DVD burner? That sounds kinda OK. BTW, when is the BRDs going to get commercial?

Get a tape drive, then. I don't think Blu-Ray will be mature enough for a while...and when it does debut, it will be PRICEY, I'm sure. Though, I am excited about the chance to burn DVD-9 discs. I can finally make perfect copies of my DVDs with special featuers and all.
