Palladium

I don't know if anybody has posted about this before, but the implications of such computers are astronomical. The book 1984 comes to mind.

http://www.notcpa.org/faq.html

Please tell me that the people of America would not actually let this happen!
Just reading this gives me chills. After reading the article about the criminilization of P2P, I didn't think things could get any worse, but this would allow Microsoft, and all the major companies to have a "back door" into EVERYONE'S computers. If you had something they didn't want you to have, they could simply delete it.

After reading the site, please sign the petition, we can not let this happen!

Its already happened mate take it easy. Spyware the many microsoft xp back doors (most famous was the one with the music files simply moving your mouse cursor over the windows media player icon hackers could get into your pc). Its ok its been around for a while but they won't delete anything from your harddrive.

BTW it sounds scary but I doubt it will happen. Microsoft has an iron clad grip on the competition if it goes too far... well it will fall on itself when other os's and the like decide they don't want this crap incorporated onto there software. Thus people will buy that software instead, and regardless the beauty of it is that someone out there will make a program that will delete/control this paladium

Edit:you'll get more hits on this thread if you gave it a better name i.e paladium:an end to pirate software.

EDIT:They are saying that everyone must use the same os namely made from Microsoft? God no they are also saying that any software not palladium compliant will not work on well won’t work at all and if you are doing a free software it must pass palladium crap?!

FREEWARE AS WE KNOW IT IS DEAD!

This is utter trash. It is an incredible invasion of piracy! I mean um, privacy, uh yeah... If this crap goes through, I swear I will never upgrade my computer.

A little doubt... Intel is involved on this, so, could they make some kind of resctriction on their chips to work only with palladium software? I think it's highly possible, and would be a major problem... Think about your processor just rejecting Linux. On the other side, if AMD didn't put any kind of restriction, it would be the way to go, but it would be piss me totally... And if they were to adhere to this trend, we would be totally screwed. But is this even legal? I mean, how can this be compatible with my privacy rights???

Even if Intel and AMD include palladium into their CPUs it probably won't get used (like the unique serial numbers on the Pentium 3). Of course it all depends on public opinion and feedback. They'll probably have it as an option which you can turn off and on.

The way it explains Palladium, by the second generation, it will be built directly into the cpu chips making it near impossible to bypass. This software will constantly be connecting to an internet database to see if the applications you are running are not "blacklisted." If they are, it won't let you run them at all. If they get Palladium in enough people's homes, pretty soon they can tell the computer not to let you run anything that they haven't certified.

So you wouldn't be able to run emulators, definitely.

Also, take this into consideration. Say you like to make programs, (with visual basic, C++, whatever...) since visual basic will probably have certification, you can make your program, but then, guess what?? YOU CAN'T EVEN RUN THE PROGRAM THAT YOU JUST CREATED!!!! Unless you want to get it certified, by paying M$ $100,000.

Plus, Palladium has scary implications for censorship. Any file they don't want on your computer they could just remotely delete!!!.

Sounds real bad to me.

THe free version of linus is going to be screwed because its not going to be palladium compliant thus you will alsop need to find a company selling non palladium cpu's...

You can kiss goodbye to free software too...

I very much doubt it. Microsoft just wants to make sure everyone pays $500 for their stupid MS Office. I could recreate most of Word and Excel using just Visual Basic. Apparently being worth 46 billion dollars isn't enough for Gates.

The question is could you afford to palladium-certify it?

I thought this was interesting. It shows that the Palladium system is in clear violation of our Constitutional rights: http://fairuse.nylxs.com/

Of course, it seems like Congress is starting to ignore the Constitution because of large corporations.
