i was instaling a game on my hard drive which is very noisy and with 45gb left after that i thought i would play the game and a blue screen of death came up saying something about npsf something and then when i turned it back on my hard drive (dont know if it was my hard drive might have a been a fan) made a load grinding noise. is my hard drive just about had it, it a maxtor one by the way, and what is npfs?

it's the heat, when maxtors heat up, they will make grinding noises and also freeze your computer and such (most of the time the computer resumes after the grinding part). I only was able to see this phenomenon during the summer, but only with my maxtor. that's why i'm not gonna get another maxtor hard drive...

I never heard a problem of heat causing a grinding noise in hard drives, incliding Maxtor drives. To be on the safe side, run a SMART HD monitor to see if your HD is acutally failling on you http://www.ariolic.com/activesmart/index.html |
