Tweaking my MX420 PCI, a lil help here :)
The memory on this sucker can go ALOT higher, I'm sure of that. I'm just wondering, what type of paste or adhesive should I use to attach ramsinks? Also I overclocked this bad boy before and it seemed too high because there was crap all over my screen and the monitor kept refreshing, and the system would sometimes lock up. Is there anyway around that? Was it the core clock that caused the screen garbage? Or the memory? Well anyway I just wanted your 2 cents on what items I should use to get the most out of this old dog. I only plan to have it around for a couple more months, so what the hell .

probably the memory. i never get crap when i do a lot to the core but i get crap everywhere when i do memory. your best bet, for starters is to go to the control panel and select "auto" and let nvidias thing OC it for you. then go to RivaTuner and use their utility to bump it up step by step. ive found that rivatuner is much better at adjustments than the Nvidia control panel.

Use Articsilver 5 and superglue. Put AS5 in the middle, then superglue the cornors down. You can always rip them off without too much hassle.

I wouldn't bother overclocking it if i were you. IMO, there would be a massive bottle neck, furthermore its a PCI slot.

Well guys, I found an old 586 AMD K5 CPU cooler and I jacked the heat sink and fan since it's no longer in use. Anyway here are the pics, I wonder if they're good enough to do a lil cooling. I saw some FX5200 with only heatsinks, or very tiny heatsinks and fans. Tell me what you think and if these are good. BTW the fan is a cooler master DC12V0.9W sleeve bearing is listed on the sticker.

No, super glue is awesome because it dosnt conduct electricity. Thoes heatsinks look good for ramsinks, yet they are real short.

Erm, no offense, but why didn't you post this in 1 of the 3000 other threads about you tweaking your MX420 PCI?

Anyway this guy just wants more performance out of that card, and I feel oc'ing it will not make it go faster, as it is already limited by the slow PCI bus. As a matter of fact, I oc'ed my old TNT2 PCI once, and the games were worse. Either due to the fact the card had crappy cooling, or the fact that the PCI latency increased. So I still stand by what I said in another thread: Get a new mobo with AGP, then worry about a video card.

they wont, besides Bahamut ive heard of other people where their games slowed down because of increased PCI lag, it's not a good idea

Oh well, I was bored so I hooked up the fan, I peeled off the sticker since it was pretty ugly, maybe I'll replace it with an Nvidia fan sticker later. Still, I think every vid card today should have heatsink/fan combo, and besides this little fan packs a punch, it circulates air really well. BTW, I don't think that PCI lag theory is all that bad, but why did they also make a MX440 PCI with DDR if they knew there was a that big of a prob? Oh well, Anyway here's some pics:

Results: Defaults - 3dmark2001se: 2800 300/190 - 3dmark2001se: 3600 310/ 200 - 3dmark2001se: 3800 (Tons of artifacts, froze at some spots) overall I think it doesn't do too much...an extra couple of FPS and 800+ in 3dmark...but I need to test it with PSX emus later.

Well when you have a slow GPU any extra frames are a bonus . 800 3D marks may not be much on its own but percentage-wise that's a 28.6% performance increase, which should more than justify the overclock.

Yeah, the overclock worked pretty good. Once I get the metal scissors from my dad Ill make the ramsinks and buy some artic silver at micro center this week. Maybe I'll be able to keep it at 300/200 without any artifacts. But, yes it's probably my cele, and yes I can stick a 2.4ghz P4 in here, and I plan to do that sometime soon. The retail boxed 2.4 P4 northwood is $166. Celerons got 128kb L2 cache, and for games and benchmarks that's what's heavily tested. If it had say 256kb at least, I'd be getting pretty high scores. That P4 I want has 512kb full speed L2, so that will rock once I stick it in. But no cooliscool, if my cele and your tualatin cele went at it, mine would kill it in raw clockspeed. You just have 128kb more L2 cache than me

I didn't say my cpu ran at a higher clock speed than yours. I just siad that it is probably faster in real world performance. That extra 128KB and a good core make all the difference. ![]() btw, your avril avatar makes you look *****y.

LoL, northwood is a good core But take out those stars... The avatar is too funny.Anyway, I need help applying thermal compound. Is there anyway of just applying the thermal compound without any glue? I have this dynex siver thermal compound I got at bestbuy for $7 and someone told me I needed to use krazy/superglue to attach it to my ram moddules...As you can see from the pic above I have 8 ram modules, all on the front..If anyone can take that pic and outline where I have to put what, or point me to a good article about it, I'd appreciate it. I have the silver compound and some krazy(super)glue that's sorta watery but holds strong as hell. Thanks! Hopefully I can get this dog running smoothly with a 30% power increase... :guitar: I saw the new PCI cards...just MX440s and FX5200 and even a Radeon 9200SE. I'll get a 9100 sometime later, since I'm really not sold on ATI's OpenGL support, and I've been an Nvidia homer since I bought this card in the summer of 2002 for $100 at BestBuy.
