Bah! You guys just aren't aware of the shear amount of dust in the air in the under-developed world.

You can't use that as an excuse. It's not that dusty over here, so either Brazil is dusty, or your room is.

(and guess what. We all think it's the latter of the two)

PS. Any reason as to why you're still using a CRT, other than the costs of LCD monitors?

Even though cost probably is a part of the reason for him, it's not for me, so I'll answer too.

Does it really even matter? I could give reasons, yes, but I don't need other people telling me their subjectivity for something that obviously doesn't match mine if they're even asking that to begin with. Yes, there are some people that simply actually flat out prefer the older CRTs.

Actually, they are better in the sense that they produce less heat and take up less space. So it's not pure subjectivity.

And no, it does not really matter. I was just being curious.

The room gets dusted everyday, but more dust still piles up, there's nothing you can do about it apart from sweeping it like 4 times a day which isn't practical.

Well......I don't see anything wrong with them. Brought this like 4 years back for just $56, a 19" LCD was probably over $200. They take up more space, so what? The table has ample space. Some people have a problem with the low refresh rates, and I too feel rather uncomfortable 60Hz, but right now its at 72Hz which is just fine for me.

In short, it wasn't worth the money. The cost in electricity bills saved from buying one would have been far lower then the difference in initial cost anyway.

And here you go with what I was talking about.

You're missing the big picture due to the details.

It's subjective. End of story. No, it's not objective because one feels so very strongly (sometimes even aggressively) about it. Sorry. Your opinion is your subjectivity. Feeling strongly about it does not raise it to fact.

P.S. This is in no way intended to belittle anyone's opinions, but opinions aren't fact, and shouldn't be argued onto someone else if they don't want it (I'm not saying you did this either). That's my overall point.

Are you trying to say that they do NOT take up less space nor produce less heat?

If you play stupid you can always say that you'd rather have 28 kbps internet connection rather than a 20 MBps one, just because it's ALL based on subjectivity.

Sure, you can prefer thing A against thing B, but you can't go around saying that there's no real reason as to why one is better than the other, because that's just wrong.

PS. I never intended to appear aggressive or imply that CRTs are garbage or anything of the like. I just wanted to know what were his reasons.

I'm not playing stupid. I wouldn't waste my time doing such a thing.

Your comparison is a bit skewed. Even though one may prefer an internet connection that is slower (they probably wouldn't prefer it so much as be content with it since it's all they need, which isn't the same thing anyway), it's still slower and inferior, but with visual beauty, it's in the eye of the beholder, as they say. Some may prefer how CRTs look, or some aspects about them. I'm not saying either is better. I'm kind of just irritated with the elitists that think it's something they (for whatever reason) need to knock since it's older and phased out of the mainstream, and then they try and turn subjectivity into objectivity (even if part of it is objective, it's ultimately subjective).

Admittedly, I should be apologizing, since I was the one to get aggressive when you just asked a question to someone else, but I was trying to make a point about what you were getting into (see my previous post), and I hope you see that now.

CRT'ds have better color saturation, and can display different resolutions without a sheer drop of quality.

Most of the CRT's i have used were decent but i hated them. The quality wasnt killed in different resolutions, it was just the lighting and stuff, especially in dark games having to crank up the brightness and still not being enough.

To each their own. Some prefer one, and some prefer the other.

Do note though that it's not that CRTs are darker than should be, but rather the opposite, it's that LCDs are brighter than should be (this even ends up being pitched as a pro for LCDs). Their blacks and darker levels aren't as good, and they have a backlight, so it appears bright(er), even in dark scenes.

You also may have had a bad CRT, either in age or in quality. I know there's some CRTs I've seen that look terrible (many later Compaq ones come to mind), even new.

Yeah thats probably true. I always did use cheaper crt's. didnt really know the difference back then. was a few years ago now and the differences wernt as big as with the lcds, and todays standards. All these timinings and contrast etc. much more you have to know.

Squall is right with that. I've seen a friend do that so that he could actually letterbox a game that would otherwise have been stretched(I think it's called letterboxing. Whatever).

Also, I never said that CRTs had no advantages over LCDs. And as I said before, if you look at it from the point of "beauty", then every damn thing in existence is is subjective. Which is why I went on to talk about modems. As with everything, both have their pros and cons, but with widescreen becoming the mainstream format for most games and movies, and with them actually being made to fit our field of view(compare the biggest CRT you can find against a widescreen monitor of the same size. Due to the screen being wide, it's easier for us to actually look at different parts of the screen at the same time).

Though the backlit screen makes all colors be a bit lighter than they should be(most notable with black), it's not that annoying. It's not even noticeable once you're used to it.
