3dfx and ATI

Hi I recently bought an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro to replace my aging 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 PCI but I was wondering can you keep both cards in the same computer without having conflicts and problems? It would be nice since I love my voodoo card for emulation.

Re: 3dfx and ATI

I would imagine so, although you'd need to reboot and reconfigure the BIOS to use the other. I've had problems with my Voodoo 2 before on my Radeon cards though (both the 9000 and 9500) so I'm a little hesitant about combining 3Dfx cards with ATI ones.

Re: 3dfx and ATI

You can keep both the Voodoo 5 pci and the Ati agp in the computer at the same time. I did with my Geforce fx and V5 pci. Quad displays anyone?

Re: 3dfx and ATI

You don't need to play with the BIOS in WindowsXP, Demigod. All you need to do is to assign the primary display in Display properties.

Re: 3dfx and ATI

Everytime I hear 3dfx and Voodoo I start to remember how well my Voodoo3 2000 treated me. A lot of the time I think to myself - I wish they would make more PCI video cards that could work with another PCI/AGP card to increase bandwidth/processing capacity. Remeber the old Voodoo2? It'd be complex I imagine (especially PCI+AGP). but it'd definetly be cool!

Ahh too bad there probably isn't enough profit to make putting good GPUs on PCI cards. Then again maybe if they use their partially functional or value GPUs as expansion upgrade cards it might be worthwhile. It's a bit crazy but I think it'd be funky and nostalgic. Good for the enthusiast crowd.

Re: 3dfx and ATI

There just isn't enough bandwidth on the PCI bus to bother with anything faster anymore. Simply put 133MB/sec vs 2GB/sec isn't really a comparison anymore Hmm Voodoo, darn I need a 5500 PCI so bad. They're not easy to find even on Ebay.

What if I had 5 PCI slots and I filled up all 5 with PCI Video card upgrades + a Radeon 9800 XT? That's 2GB+133MBx5!!!

Whoa... quad displays? You mean you managed to both

a) find a Mac V5 with a DVI port and
b) successfully flash it with a PC V5 BIOS?

I was thinking of doing that, but I wasn't sure if the DVI port would work with the PC BIOS.

Yeah.. The Geforce FX can do Triple displays. TV-out, digital out, analog out. Added to the Voodoo 5's and you get 4 displays. Of course 2 of the displays are twins. Hehe. I actually had 4 displays once. Now I'm down to 3.

BTW. I have a Fx5900, not a 5950. Although I have it overclocked past 5950 specs.

I was lucky enough to get my 5500 AGP for $40 canadian at a local flea market. You can't beat that price now can you? I must be really lucky eh?

There's usually 2 or 3 at any given time.

If I can ever find a model with 5.5ns RAM, I'll sell you my current one.

Re: 3dfx and ATI

hmm so as usual the cards came with two different ram chip types? How typical. What were the speeds 6ns and 5.5? 6 being the common and less overclockable?

Supposedly. I have never actually seen one. :P

Unfortuantely, half of the people I email on eBay asking for port numbers off of RAM chips never reply.
