Your favorite subject/science/art/whatever

Ok, everyone here has something that is really good at or really likes at the school. This could be anything from sports, chemistry, history, etc.

However, as we keep growing, we start questioning ourselves the usefulness of what we are studying, we start disregarding x and y subject as useless or "not necessary"

This finally ends, in the last years with us studying either what appeals to us or what we deem as useful.

Of all the subject, which are the ones the you deem as the most useful, and why.

Myself i have two, data structure/generation of algorithsm and maths (mainly algebra and trigonometry, but analitic geometr also appeals to me.... as for calculus )

Maths because they are an exceltn basis for developing our abstract thinking, and absolute tool for whatever career you want to study, because of all the thinknig capabilty that it gives you.

And data structure/algorithms because of the problem vision/and solution capability that it gives you. This mixed up with math allows you to become a solution providear in almost every thing you choose to do.

And now, the previoaus atwo were about personal utility. Now, about life and humanitary utility I deem Artificial Intelligence, and Intelligent system as the best chance of humanity of forcing evolution, and thus, increment itsa own capabilities.

Well, now i want to see which are our favorite/most useful subject for your person, and for your ideals.

I like programming and sports. I hate chemistry, physics and math but I always manage to get A s in those subjects. Biology is also another favorite.

i like... art, law (to a degree) drafting (technological design) and any other computer courses... but im also very good at math and chemistry, though im not taking science anymore since i dont see myself becoming a scientist in the future, besides, the scientific method takes too long imo, so i'd prolly get kicked out of wherever i go

Re: Your favorite subject/science/art/whatever

i like writing and art the best of all. Then stuff like philosophy and psychology. Maybe law, but that'll be a far stretch. I'm not up for any sort of technological advancement of any sort, I prefer to improve the conditions right now. I'd rather enrich lives, than anything else. And the realm of the metaphysical is more appealing than any sort of math or biology.

Ok, although i cannot deny the pleasure that art gives us, i have to argue a lil on your metaphysical preferencews, as ive alwas deemed that part of the philosophy as utterly useless because of tis inherent uncapability of been seriously debated at :/

Re: Your favorite subject/science/art/whatever

I'm good at english and science. I love art but can't stand school art. I don't beleuve art could be graded myself. I am good at math only when I apply myself.

But if I had to choose I would say either English or Science.

i don't like any subjects that require too much memorization: history, chemistry, biology etc. computers are my preferred field, but i can handle math when i need to. i'm artistically autistic, so i don't dwell in those areas.

Re: Your favorite subject/science/art/whatever

I do film and music production as well as computer graphics. Mathematics tend to play a major role in each of those fields so I must say that mathematics would be the main basic subject I'm currently focusing on.

I disagree with this because art has been used throughout history as a significant way to portray the influences and ideals within certain time periods throughout our history. It is something that helps to define us as a whole.

Art by any proffesional artist (basically an artist who gives special attention to detail and meaning of his/her work) must be given an in-depth analysis to efficiently discover the influences, ideals, and culture of the time and/or place in which that artist lived. Besides the social and historical impact of art, it is also a major tool in analyzing the human psyche.

While art may not be as precise a subject as mathematics or chemistry because of it's open-endedness, it's nevertheless a subject that can and should be taken very seriously and is also worthwhile of much debating.

Re: Your favorite subject/science/art/whatever

The only thing that COULD be fun is programming, but the lousy excuse for a teacher we have (mind you that for all I know we could've gotten a new one, I haven't been to school since the middle of august :P) makes it utterly boring... I mean, what do we learn from typing down his code that he writes on the blackboard and then hitting "compile"? He doesn't even say what most of the code does - the only thing that's nice is when he walks out of the room and I can code my game instead.. which of course leads to me not doing the copy/paste from the blackboard and papers in my hands that I should be doing and thereby not passing the grade - I HATE school.

Another one that can be interesting at times is Swedish class, namely when we focus in Writing. The problem is that when you get a single week to write something, unless you want to devote all too much free time on it (and who wants to?) it's an 8 pages story maximum - and I'd like to do longer stuff... so yeah, once again this sucks - I hate writing short stories, feels like it has no point.

History... has it's few moments when it's actually vaguely interesting...

Society... is a terrible thing to study, but we have a kickass teacher that makes it seem vaguely interesting at times...

Yeah, I hate school. All I want is to get out so I can continue working on my game, preferbly with a team...

I hate schhol
though English lessons are easy (not for everyone, heh ) and the teacher is always off-topic (since last week, she spends her times talking about philo, Dr Jeckill and Mr. Hyde ....)

Art is also cool, and we're almost idling for 2 hours

Beside that, I'd rather like being at home

Math and Philosophy. I suck at everything else. Mainly because I just don't get into it enough to want to do good, but still. I especially suck at Chemistry and History.

I was always good at Maths and science... and languages for some bizzare reason, except English.... but then again, who honestly cares about taking apart some guys poem about daffodils. I like Daffodils as much as the next person, but no person should feel the need to write more than a couple of sentances on them. Two pages is overkill.

I was also crap at anything that required me to write an essay.

Oh, I thought I was the only accountant here

But now my own answers:

Physics and math are my favorite subjects (you really can't have physics without math, or else you lose all the predictive power of physics). But I'm not too good at pure, abstract math - I'm more into the applied aspects of it.

I like accounting too, specially because it gives you a great perspective on business administration without resorting to boring (and nearly useless) theories, like Weber's. But my favorite field withing accounting isn't related to administration. It's costing - and involves lots of math (that's why so many engineers are into it). That's why I wrote a thesis about ABC costing and JIT management

Biology is very good, especially genetics. Not my strong point, but I know a thing or two about it. And long live to Darwin's natural selection

Philosophy is good to read alone. I hated it in school, because we always ended discussing religions (and I was the sole atheist in my class). Everyone got fighting, because the catholics thought they were the only true christians, the protestants thought the same, and the others tried to claim this as well. Religion always makes a mess. So my tastes for philosophy go more for the existentialism, like Nietzsche, Sartre or Camus. I also like to read Kant, Hume, Spinoza and many others.

Statistics is great to learn, if you don't wanna be fooled by the mass media (and to check out preposterous claims of the pseudoscientists).

One thing which I don't bother reading much is history. It just does not appeal to me - although I do recognize it's importance. Chemistry isn't in my favorites too - too many rules to be remembered.

Me too. I hate writing essays... book reports especially.

I'm in my junior year of high school now. My plans are to to finish high school, then go to community college for two years. I will get a lot of mundane stuff out of the way and especially take two years in business. Then I'll see what I want to do with my life, and maybe go to a larger college. Right now I'm considering majoring in accounting, and also taking computer science.

BTW, English grammar, at least the American variant (dunno about British), is the most awful thing ever invented.
