PS2 motion blur?

hmmmm I have seen that there are some PS2 games that have motion blur (namely, MGS2 and GTA vice city)..... so, am I the only one around here that thinks that blur is ridiculously annoying?.... man.... it sure puts out most of the gameplay of those titles....

In MGS2 it didnt bother me. It gave it more feeling. That if you are not playing it in pc (there sometimes seems like you say).

Re: PS2 motion blur?

I don't mind the motion blur as long as it's not used too much in actual gameplay. In ingame cutscenes it's cool though. Metal Gear Solid doesn't feel right without the motion blurs. Final Fantasy 9 summons used the blur to create cool effects like heat/light waves and stuff.

GTA3 is an example of having too much motion blurs in gameplay parts.

Re: PS2 motion blur?

okie... motino blur has to be used wisely (even my fav RPG -Legend of Dragoon- used it to emulate waves and heat) but nothing more than that..... its obvious how GTA:VC overuses it... man, every move in that game has a horrible motion blur....

as for MGS2, I don't think the motion blur is awful, yeah.... but it doesn't look great.... it would be good to be able to take it out just to check....... I am sure it would be good to know how it'd look, personally I liked how MGS solid snake looked (only blur in the stealth siuts)

Re: PS2 motion blur?

I hate motion blur.. with a passion, I seriously would prefer a 300fps eye instead of this analogue **** we've got that gives out motion blur when you move our hand quickly in front of your face... it'd be better to see the hand detailed in a smooth 300fps motion... if anyone ever creates a camera to install in the eye or something similar, I'll be the first to get one ^_~x

Re: PS2 motion blur?

One thing I really hate is the heat effects in GT3. Im sure they use a sense of motion blur for that. It pisses me off because instead of seeing your pretty car in replay you see a wavy car and cant make out detail.

That doesn't happen on my computer. The blurs don't freeze the game. It's just overused in that game.

MGS substance PC allows you to disable all motion blurs.

Re: PS2 motion blur?

i like motion blur; it's realistic. however when it goes beyond that (like the stunning overuse in GTA3) then it just sucks

Then join me in my quest to remove motion blur from your eyes, and you won't have to call that torment "realistic" anymore ^_~x

Gah! Realistic! Sheesh looks more like if you were to just wake up and open your eyes from a coma of 12 years.

Re: PS2 motion blur?

Kidd... It's actually not your eyes that's causing the motion blur that we see but your visual cortex in the brain. Check this link out for an interesting read on the how's and why's

Re: PS2 motion blur?

I liked this part. Its a good read actually.

Quote:
So what is the answer to how many frames per second should we be looking for? Anything over 60 fps is adequate, 72 fps is maximal (anything over that would be overkill). Framerates cannot drop though from that 72 fps, or we will start to see a degradation in the smoothness of the game. Don't get me wrong, it is not bad to play a game at 30 fps, it is fine, but to get the illusion of reality, you really need a frame rate of 72 fps. What this does is saturate the pipeline from your eyes to your visual cortex, just as reality does. As visual quality increases, it really becomes more important to keep frame rates high so we can get the most immersive feel possible. While we still may be several years away from photographic quality in 3D accelerators, it is important to keep the speed up there.
Looks like 3dfx isn't so full of it.

Re: PS2 motion blur?

Interesting read indeed.

But, I don't mind motion blur. In fact, I like it. In MGS2 and FFX, it was used well.

As for GTA3, yes....the motion blur was used TOO much.

Re: PS2 motion blur?

Jesus, i borrowed GTA3 today and its really overused almost anoying. Still im thinking it looks good in MGS2 and Dino Crisis 2 (psone). Btw, is there a pc game only that uses it? I have only seen that in psone and 2 (and ports) making me think its a way to compensate to inability to make the game run faster some times (to give the idea of speed).

There are few if any PC only games that use motion blurs at all. It's mostly the PC ports that uses it. It's a nice effect when used properly.
