I think that I have a dead CD drive
My Cd drive has been acting up lately... It occasionally doesn't read Cds, and then does read them when you re-input them (open and then close drive). I know that it is not a power issue as I have a 300W PSU and have tried removing the other drive, and any unneccasary stuff from the comp. The CD-Drive will not read CDs to boot from, but is detected by the BIOS, and by windows. The LEDs flash on startup and it physically should work in every way, it just doesn't read ANY CDs (factory printed, burned) about 80% of the time. It doesn't work in Win2k, WinXP, Win98, Mandrake Linux, Windows 3.1, or Redhat Linux. It is set to slave of the writer, and he problem persists if it is set to master. I have had it for 2 years and have used it a lot, so, is it dead or is there some way to 'revitalize' it? Can I replace the laser or something? My budget is kinda tight right now (buying a new V-Card etc..) Thanks A lot folks...

Eh if you have two drives then I guess it's no biggie. But have you tried using a Laser cleaner? Anther thing that I had with my old Dell and it's old CD drives is, (both broke) that it tended to read CDs after you inserted it's "favorite" cd.

This CD Drive is completely messed up! Buy yourself a CD-RW/DVD-ROM Drive (which shouldn't be too much).... B.T.W, Violneb, how are you? ![]() ready2rumbelX

I fixed the problem, it turns out that the bar the shuttle that the laser is mounted (the shuttle uses it to slide around) on was getting grimy. A little bit of WD40 fixed the problem right up. I discovered this by opening the drive up and watching it work as it was plugged in... I don't know how I thought of doing this, but hey... it fixed the problem!
