i do aikido.
sports are unhealthy because they make you push yourself to the limit, and even further, risking your health. i know a lot of people who have problems due to competitive sports.

if people who are unfit try to compete at a level beyond what their body is capable of, sure, **** happens, injuries are a possibility.

my entire life is athletics oriented. i'm in the army - i run 15 miles a day carrying a 75 pound pack, or on some days, 10 miles carrying a stretcher with 300lbs between 2 people, + a 75 pound pack. when i'm not running, i'm doing pushups or situps or chinups, or i'm digging or climbing or running an obstacle course. in an average day, i probably spend 6 hours doing hard physical work. and when all that's done, i relax by playing a fierce game of basketball until i'm too tired to stand (then i come and post on ngemu).

imo, there's no limit to what the human body can accomplish - so long as you build up to it with proper training. i once met a guy from the british army who could do 50 one-armed chinups (verrry difficult since he was around 6'3" and 240 lbs). if he just woke up one day and decided to try to do a one armed chinup, he probably would have dislocated his shoulder. it's all about gradually raising the bar.

very true, but i'm not talking about self-improvement sports (like bodybuilding, running, etc), but competitive sports, especially solo ones (err, you know what i mean). it's not a coincidence sporters retire so early.

ahh, i should have made my point clearer. what i was trying to say was, that playing any "game" (for the lack of a better word) sports, like basketball, ice hockey, soccer, is crazy unless you have great physical fitness.

since we pretty much agree, i won't go into further details, but one very good example of this is in basketball players:

when you jump into the air, and land on your feet, you are creating approximately double your own weight in pounds of pressure, which is subsequently absorbed by your knees and spine. so, if you're 20 pounds overweight, your body is absorbing 40 pounds more pressure than it should be - if you jump 10 times in a game, that's 400 more pounds of pressure absorbed than your body is used to. your knees will give out very quickly under this sort of treatment, and your spine will follow soon afterwards - ouch =D
