my PC is a paperweight
Ok, here goes: After successfully frying my previous 2100+, which I changed for a 2000+, I partially fried my Asus A7V333 too. Yesterday I got it exchanged for an Asus A7V8X. When I booted up normally for the first time, the video was all resetted (i.e. 640x480 @ 8-bit color), but then it hung. I rebooted, but then as initial Windows 2000 loading bar starts filling up, it halts and says something like "(filename) is missing or is corrupt. Please repair this installation via the Windows 2000 setup".So I insert and boot from the CD, starts loading all the necessary setup files and gets to "Setup is starting Windows 2000", but then I get the following BSOD: STOP: 0x0000001E (0xC00000005, 0x8041DF2D, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED Address 8041DF2D base at 80400000, DateStamp 384d5a76 - ntfoskrnl.exe Since trying to reinstall Windows 2000 didn't work, i tried (and insisted) rebooting my PC until it actually did get into Windows 2000. The only problem was that Windows 2000 was acting screwy (i.e. my cable internet kept disconnecting randomly [maybe it had something to do with the NIC?] and it wouldn't uninstall software because that'd cause my PC to reboot), so i wanted to reinstall Windows 2000, but since I couldn't enter the setup normally, I got Partition Magic 8 to try and format C:, but failed miserably. If I tried and booted after that, I'd get "NTLDR missing. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to reboot". So then I tried formatting my HD with help from a friend's PC, and the setup loaded "correctly", but then hung when I wanted setup to format it once again. After that I keep getting the previous BSOD or my PC hangs when I get into the Windows 2000 setup. What I haven't tried is getting rid of the "faulty" partition using regular fdisk. The problem is that my HD has C: and D:, and in D: i have my life so I wouldn't want fdisk to mysteriously make D: disappear (I'm not sure if that's true). So I'm in a standstill: other than that, I've really no idea how to fix my HD and get it back to working condition. |

Hrm, I'll have to try that tomorrow, though I find it weird that 2K wouldn't be able since to install since it did with the 2 sticks with my old mobo.

Sounds to me like you have bad ram or you are OC'ing your ram. I had similar symptoms, and everything cleared up after I changed my ram to Crucial brand. Try this test first though just to make sure: http://www.memtest86.com/ you might also want to switch DIMM slots, but be sure to try the least aggressive settings for your ram first.

nah, it just needs a reinstall. zukeft, fdisk only deletes partitions you tell it to delete, don't worry ^_^ you just have to be careful what button you push. nyaa |

>Sounds to me like you have bad ram or you are OC'ing your ram. Nope, it can't be the RAM since I was already able to install Windows 2000 without any problems. >if it is a bad sector, back up ur d: and do a zero fill Hopefully not, though there might be a tiny chance of that since I've had trouble with it (i.e. random reboots and PC hangs). I hope not anyway. Oh, and what's a zero fill? A full format? >nah, it just needs a reinstall. zukeft, fdisk only deletes partitions you tell it to delete, don't worry ^_^ you just have to be careful what button you push. Since C: is a primary partition D: is an extended partition, if I get rid of C: won't I have to get rid of D: too? |

It might still be the ram. I was able to succesfully install winXP on screwed up ram. It wouldn't boot so well though. Do check up on your ram, I honestly think that's what your problem is.

you should check PartitionMagic if it can morph extended partitions into primary partitions. i'm not sure. OR you could take the HD to someone, and make an image of it (Norton Ghost can do it, but i'm sure there are alternatives). nyaa |

Update: yesterday I backed up my important files on a friend's computer. I deleted both partitions, wiping my HD clean, started the Windows 2000 installation... and it still wouldn't work. My PC would hang when my setup program would begin to format the primary partition to NTFS. So I booted with a bootdisk, used fdisk to delete the partitions, recreated the partitions and formatted them with FAT32. I started the Windows 2000 installation again... and it worked. After it was ready, I installed all the necessary drivers that weren't identified during the installation. I converted both partitions to NTFS. Everything seemed to work in that moment. I went back home, tried install SP3 and my PC crashed and rebooted during its installation. Everytime Windows 2000 tried to boot, winlogon.exe kept crashing and rebooting the PC so I couldn't really get into Windows 2000. I booted with the Windows 2000 CD to try to select the "Repair a Windows 2000 installation option"... and I got another BSOD, similar to the one above, but with acpi.sys instead. So I'm back at square one once again. >It might still be the ram. I was able to succesfully install winXP on screwed up ram. It wouldn't boot so well though. Do check up on your ram, I honestly think that's what your problem is. I tried that, taking one stick out and I'd get the same problem. Maybe I haven't been as thorough with the RAM testing, but I'm 99.9% sure that it isn't the RAM (when my previous mobo only worked with 1 memory slot, I switched the RAM and tested both sticks and experienced no problems whatsoever). AFAIK, my HD isn't messed up because everytime I format C: and D: it checks its integrity and sector problems never show up. What I can conclude is that my motherboard and HD are incompatible or vice versa. All of these problems afterall did begin when I changed my mobo. |

Update: I tried updating the mobo BIOS with Aflash (boot into DOS, load the program, choose the BIOS update and presto), but it would hang meaning that out of the 4 times that I've tried to do that, 4 times it hasn't worked. I've also tried installing Windows XP... and I still get the same BSOD. >The Inquirer that said something about SP3 making windows2k unusable in some cases I don't think that it's the case here because it had worked before with no problems. All that I can say is that my PC went haywire as soon as I changed the mobo. |
