Which upgrade should I go with?

Which upgrade should I go with? Should I upgrade to an Athlon XP 2000 w/ Radeon 9000 Pro (128 meg) or Athlon XP 1700 w/ Geforce 4 Ti 4200 (128 meg)? I have just enough money to go with one or the other.

Well...
The DVD playback and 2d quality of the Radeon is better, but it's slower in 3d performance than the Ti4200 IIRC.

I'd get the Ti 4200. Simply because for gaming its gonna be faster. Has Superior FSAA and Geforce 4 Ti's have very decent DVD playback. Not ATi standard. But its above any previous Geforce card.

Then again. it depends on how the ease of upgrading is for you is. If changing a proccessor out phases you. Then get the chip first. And then worry about your graphics card later.

But for pure benching. a Athlon XP 1700+ With a Geforce 4 Ti 4200 will get a higher score than an Athlon XP 2000+ with a Radeon 9000 Pro will get.

for better dvd video quality go with the radeon. for better fps in games go with the GF4 ti4200. according to pricewatch its only a 9 dollar diffrence between the 1700 and 1800 and a 17 dollar diffrence between 1700 and 1900. you DO have 9 extra dollars lying around right?

Flip a coin, its easy to decide. For me I will pick the one with the GF4 Ti 4200 simply because of the games and fast performance.

I'd say go for a better CPU, and worse video card. It just makes more sense.

Either choice you make. It's easy to upgrade either later.

However it is "my" opinion. That the Geforce 4 Ti 4200 and Athlon XP 1700+ will offer you the best performance for "todays" games. And your CPU will be easily upgraded later.

I would have the better CPU, and worse video card, since a you can upgrade to new video card later. Besides, with NV30 coming up, you might as well spend less on the video card, and spend more on the CPU.

If you still have extra cash after you buy your parts, I recommend you buy some memory. Now that's up to you.

By the way, do you have the motherboard and power supply to run a Athlon XP?

I would say mix n' match. Go for the Athlon 2000+ and the TI 4200. I am running an Athlon XP 2000+ amd GF4 TI 4600 and it is a great combination. Especially w/Riva Tuner and the 41.03 Detonator drivers. The 2000+ is a nice fast processor and the TI 4200 has all the same features that my card does, it is just a little slower is all. But, as dogulation000 said, make sure you have a capable motherboard and power supply to run the XP.
sincerely,

If he doesn't have the right motheboard and power supply, then he will run into some problems, paticulary monetary ones.

I wish I had the money to mix & match. I may wait a few months till Christmas and then I could probably mix but as I am an impatient person, I doubt it.
