General warning about E-machines...

Don't get them... My neighbors bought a AMD 1700 128ram S3 16meg....

It runs at a slower speed then my 800mhz 256ram Geforce2 MX400 64meg... and not just in 3D... but in everything (I will put up benchmarks later if I can find my copy of 3Dmax)

I've heard bad about emachines before but this is just plain sad (it can't play GBA games full speed without a frameskip of 3)

I wouldn't call it a poor man's PC as my PC cost less (about $500 a year and 1/2 ago) and they just bought this PC yesterday for 600...

For anyone wanting to buy a new PC... I recommend the custom PC shops found in california (they are cheap and very well built PCs) the only problem is if you don't live in california you have to get them to ship it to you (probably about $20 or so in shipping)

I must say agree. Where my wife worked, the teacher had gotten an E-Machines PC. I did not care for that machine at all. In fact, it almost soured me on WIN XP. I would reccomend to leave E-Machines strictly alone.
sincerely,

Seriously tho. Building a PC isn't any harder than building a an assemble it yourself bike. Just follow the instructions. Everything is pretty much "plug it in and go" nowadays anyway.

Yeah not like back in the day... had to mess with those damn jumpers (they never went where they were supposed to the first time...)

I never really thought the jumpers were very hard to understand. The only sucky part about older PCs was manually setting the multiplier (

Didn't like thinking all mathlike? The jumpers weren't hard to figure out... just hard to get the little bastards on the pins they were supposed to be.

Well my fav gripe from back then was simm sockets. Insert the chips at a 45 degree angle to the mobo, damn that was frustrating.

People are just getting lazier these days. Setting jumpers and multipliers actually required one to think a little. Before Plug and Play you actually had to install drivers and set IRQ's and DMA's. Don't have to that anymore do we? Most new computers are ready to go right out of the box. That is unless you build it yourself. Try installing and mounting a 40Mb RLL Hard Disk in an Amiga 2000.... It's a real b*tch if you don't know what you're doing....

For the record, i'd never buy a pre-built PC. Only pre-built one i've had is a Packard Bell P75, 8mb ram, 1mb video, ISA sound. I've built all my systems since then. The one you see in my sig, the Celeron 1000, the P3 1133a, and a few others. As soon as I get my parents to get me the Duron 1.3ghz with the Mobo, that'll be another system i've put together. Besides, putting a pc together is easy nowadays. :nod2:

Betamax, I actually liked the SIMMs. They are a hell of a lot easier to get in than a DIMM in my experience. DIMMs require a lot more pressure.

Relating to jumpers though.... I spent a good year looking for a jumper diagram for my motherboard so I could clock my CPU at 233MHz. (I had replaced the old Pentium 120 CPU, and couldn't figure out how to clock it at 233, so I just left it at 120 until I could find a diagram)

As for emachines, yes they are indeed crap.

i currently use an emachine. bought it december 2000 for $400 (includes moniter!!!), 633 celeron, and a super crappy intel integrated vid card. (recently changed the vid card to a voodoo 3 3000 pci) that god damn emachine doesn't even come with an agp slot!!!

its pure crap. and built towards lower end users (people that uses the comp for word docs, listening to mp3s, email, p2p, and doing basic stuff, and strictly not for gaming. you could call it your sister's/ mom's/ dad's pc)

but for the price, its pretty good. if you are just gonna use it for "office oriented" appz

True, but it takes alot of time/effort to buy/assemble all the parts. Lots of guys I know can put together PC's but they just buy them pre-assembled just so they don't have to go through the all the trouble of doing it themselfs.
