First person shooter games!

Most of the games today are FPS, with the slight difference of enemies and story, which makes these games almost equal. Last night I downloaded UT2k3 Demo, and presonally, I didn't like the game at all, the person moves so fast that I got headaches in like 2 mins, couldn't play the game for even 2 mins man, why should I then waste my money of this crap which gives me headache.

The most upcoming game, Dome 3, would this be a FPS, if yes then I think it wouldn't be offering us something different. the game developers should emphasis on developing games, which are not FPS, but somthing different.

Just cause it's FPS doesn't mean it's bad. True alot of FPS games lack any ingenuity or originality and are cookie cutter copies of each other. If that's how you feel than don't play those particular ones. There's a bunch of ones that are unique though and quite fun. I personally love the NOLF games - which focus on stealth and spying, the Thief games - which REALLY focus on stealth, Undying - a horror-style FPS, and Hitman, which emphasizes style and stealth and usually has a way to beat it that requires no actual killing (except for the target) or gunfire. I'm really excited about playing Hitman 2 cause I think it's gonna rock.

Anyway, yeah, with the amount of detail and time put into these games now, don't think of FPS as a genre. Cause there's so many variations it's really NOT a genre anymore. Think of it as just a certain camera angle that they show the game in.

Well, Doom 3 is a game by id Soft, so it is quite sure that it will be a FPS.
Penny Arcade's take on it:
http://www.penny-arcade.com/images/2002/20020524l.gif

Anyway, I'm not against FPS, there are quite good ones like:
- Jedi Knight (it has Force Powers)
- Shogo (has also Mechs)
- Half-Life (has a great atmosphere)
- Thief 1/2 (not really a shooter, but rather a sneaker)
- System Shock 2 (with RPG elements)
- No One Lives Forever (is quite funny)

All of these games also have a great story line in common, but apart from NOLF these games are rather old, and even NOLF isn't really new.

The problem is that there are just too many FPS now, with FPS and RTS being almost the only genres on the PC, and the new FPS games aren't really that good. Sure, the graphics have improved, as has the need for more powerful graphics cards, but the gameplay is often very bad.

Just take one example: Jedi Outcast.
Sure, it looks good with the Quake 3 engine and the Force Powers are much better implemented than in its predecessor, but although the Sith engine of Jedi Knight isn't impressive and the textures of the game are nothing to write home about, but Star Wars is often defined by sounds (which both games have) and for some reason the gameplay in the old Jedi Knight is much better (I actually played it again after I finished Jedi Outcast to make sure that I wasn't just fooled by nostalgia), and although the actors in the cutscenes are bad those movies are better than the engine-cutscenes of the successor.

I like FPS and RTS and they are about the only games that still play better on the PC than on consoles, but it's a shame that these are almost the only genres still being produced for the PC with the gameplay quality constantly falling down a deep abyss...

I really like to some classical point-and-click adventures and some good action-adventures again, but I guess I'll have to focus on consoles for these types of games.

Don't know if you know Mike, but NOLF2 came out on 10/1. I have it and it's great so far. The playability and funniness still are top notch and they added more great stuff. The graphics are really nice, with really detailed textures. You thought there were alot of silly and cool gadgets in NOLF1? Well there's even more in NOLF2. Plus now, collecting intelligence items actually helps you, as the more intelligence items you get, you get more points, which can be used to increase ability stats (stealth, marksmanship, weapon skill, etc.). A must-have FPS game, especially if you liked the original.

I didn't know that actually. I just checked and according to Amazon it will be out in German in 10 days...

I noticed some of the new stuff in the teaser mission I downloaded.

I actually want to have it, but I'm still not sure if it'll agree with my hardware.
My P3-550 and Radeon 32MB DDR are a bit dated now, and I don't think that I'll upgrade soon. But the teaser ran surprisingly smooth actually.
The real problem is that I didn't have any in-game sound in the teaser, so I'm not sure if I should get the full game or not, because NOLF2 without sound would be just painful...

hmm..maybe the UT2k3 made me sick, it was just like Red Alert Regenade, hell I waited for this long hours to download something which was like something I already had, and obove all it was something I really never liked. I don't hate FPS, not all of them, I loved Return to Castle Wolfeinstien, then MOH Two really kick ass games, what I can come up with is that the FPS games should be backed with good story line.

I also don't really like the just multi-player FPS, where you run around in circles, pick up weapons, and blast anything that moves. So I never really got into games like Quake 3 or Unreal Tournament, they just lack the gameplay. They can be fun for a few hours, but I couldn't play them for several days in a row, as I do with FPS that have a decent story.

If you are into games with a story and don't mind if the graphics are a bit dated (especially Jedi Knight looks horrible when you only look at the graphics), all the titles I mentioned in my first posting could be interesting for you.

Oh, and you certainly won't get sick playing Thief, since running is a bad idea in that game ;-)

I actually find the opposite to be true. Games with a good plot/story can only last you so long (a week or two) but multiplayer games can last you months or even years. The reasonsing is simple, you're playing against other people. Some are good, some are bad, some are cheap as hell, but they all bring with them their own style of playing and keeps the game interesting. Playing against scripted computer opponents with scripted events can only appeal for so long. Defeating a good human opponent is a lot more rewarding than some computer controlled boss character, don't you think? Sure there are many FPS games with a good plot as well as multiplayer capabilities but the multiplayer experience isn't as refined or balanced as something like Quake 3 Arena. Games like Half-life may have a good single player mode but multiplayer completely blows.

Games like Q3A and UT2 are designed to be fast-paced, hardcore FPS games. The gameplay is designed to be very fast and frantic, requiring quick reflexes, good instincts and accurate aiming abilities. They also require a decent amont of strategy and tactics (circle-strafing, rocket-jumping, even camping and sniping). If the gameplay is too fast for you then find something slower (or play it at a slower pace). Quake 3 Arena in particular is a very hardcore deathmatch-oriented game without a single plot element and meant almost exclusively for deathmatching with other people. Needless to say, it only appeals to hardcore FPS gamers (UT is only semi-hardcore).

I love FPS games but I never really liked the first UT so I doubt I will be messing with the sequels, what I am really waiting for is DOOM 3, and also quake 3, and then Alien vs Preditor 3.

I always like a GOOD FPS game, but they are pretty monotonous... And many of them only manage to put a BIG, BIG headache on me... and that is no good, right?

sometimes I like them but I ussulaly always end up memorizing the whole intire game and where every thing is (not on purpose ether)
and then all the funs gone when you go to a multi-player sesion and woop the crap out off every one. (I use to be really really bored. so I sat and played 007 to no end)

My processor is signicantly faster than yours (Athlon XP 1500+), but my GFX card is similar level (GeForce256 32MB DDR) and I can run the game quite smoothly with almost everything on the highest settings. I was actually surprised by how well it ran. The game though is a RAM and resources killer though, I have 512MB DDR and it's ok, but even on 256 the load times are much longer and it gets choppy while its caching new areas. Also it'll slow down your computer for awhile after you quit, especially if you'd been playing for a long time.

The sound thing is a known codec issue, and I didn't have sound either when I first installed, but now v1.1 patch is out which fixes that.
