Athlon XP. Given the clock speeds you have decided on, the Athlon XP gives you more bang for your buck. Especially since you are going with DDR memory. It works better with the Athlons.

It depends. If you used AMD for a long time, why not? But Athlons do have their quirks.

There's no benefit of getting a KT333 chipset if you're only going to be using 266 Mhz DDR SDRAM. Save some money and get a cheap KT266a board instead. I would go with the Athlon XP as well in your situation (unless you overclock the P4 ).

It depends on what you need. If you want to make sure that EVERYTHING is compatible, want to overclock, P4 is a bit better. But if you don't plan to overclock, and used AMD products before, AMD is a better choice. |

Definately go with the Athlon 2100+ It may run at a slower actual ghz than the P4 1.8 ghz but due to it's architecture, it out performs comparable 2.1 ghz CPUs and will leave the P4 1.8 in the dust (so to speak). I have an Athlon XP 2000+ on an ECS motherboard and I couldn't be happier with it. Athlon all the way. sincerely, sx/amiga |

k7s5a is a good bord. If you don't mind the SiS chipset, We have two of those boards at this house, and they perform well.

Do get more fans for your Athlon though. To ensure longer life span. ![]() Off topic but there were girls on this forum, and I believe not anymore. Lets just say a community of thorns scare away the roses. |

I don't think it was mentioned that there is also some degree of overclockability with that mobo but due to the higher temps that will likely be generated it is not usually suggested since you will not get all that much performance gain compared to the amount of wear that will be put on the cpu

For your CPU, whether or not you over clock it (I wouldn't suggest it) might I suggest you purchase a Thermaltake heat sink and fan? I purchased one when I got my Athlon XP 2000+ and I don't regret it one bit. It keeps my CPU nice and cool. The fan and heat sink I have is the Thermaltake Volcano 7. Also, glad to hear that you are going to go w/the Athlon XP CPU. I can assure you, you won't be disappointed. sincerely, sx/amiga |

You should definitely buy extra cooling if you get a AMD Athlon.
