Question Optimum Buffer for Eternal SPU

Hi all,

I just wanted to ask what buffer size you use. I had it set to 8, the default, which worked fine for Chocobo's Dungeon 2, but makes the sound skip many times in a row for short instances with Megaman Legends. Setting it to 32 did the trick.

Can a buffer this high cause any problems? What is the buffer value measured in? Is there a way of determining the optimum value specific to one's system?

Thanks,

Leo

The higher the buffer, the longer the time between the sound being called and it being played, IIRC. Which would mean with a buffer of 1000, sounds would happen a second after they are called.

When I use Eternal SPU, I turn off framelimit in Pete's GPU and use "SPUAsymc"->"Wait" and a buffer length of 32 always works flawlessly.
When I was translating a plugin guide for Dark Watcher (or some other incident), I got to know that the buffer length in Eternal are on the unit "blocks". 1 block = ~0.05 second long of sound data/sound output delay.

Basically it depends on your soundcard, it's drivers etc, the best method is just to tweak it manually. The best advice is to set it as low as you can get away with before the sound starts to distort.

so around 20 would equal a second right?... I find that hard to believe actually...
I think it would be more like 0.02 seconds long because I have had to extend it...
but yes I do believe it varies on the power of your sound card and the amount of power it uses so it is variable for each of us

for games like beatmania it's important to set it as low as possible
the default is good though, you wont notice that.
