Re: questions about a tv pci card

I have an ATI TV Wonder VE. I mainly use it to watch/record TV shows.

1. I have no idea, I've only used this one. I assume they're pretty much the same, just different software and controls.

2. Yes.

3. Yes.

4. Retail stores, on-line, virtually anywhere.

5. No. A TV card provides more functionality and is a lot cheaper than buying a new videocard. I bought mine for $60 CDN, which comes to around $35 US. ($27 on price watch)

6. My card (and most other TV cards) have composite in, as well as cable in.

Well actually there are differences, there are some plenty of cards available in the market, the one I use is not the best one, it is of Pixel View, since it is giving some hell of a performance to me therefore I would recommend U the same, they are damn cheap, and tunes upto 200 channels.

There are then two models, play TV pro and play TV xp, read ahead, as I have mentioned the main difference between them in the further answers.

2. will i be able to watch movies on it through a vcr
Yes of course, usually all TV cards have three line in's S-Video, RF and composite. Most VCR's today use compsite, so U would be able to watch movies in good quality.

This usually depends upon two things, first ur card and then your computer. If you are using a simple TV card like Play TV pro, which I myself have, they would become very annoying when capturing movies. Why? because they don't have the hardware MPEG-II encodation. So what happens is that when U capture a small portion of Video, it would take a lot of space on ur Harddisk, and also comsumes a lot of ram. The playTV XP does support real-time MPEG-II encodation, therefore I think this might do a better job for U.

4. were do i get one
If U mean online, then I don't have any Idea, as I'v never bought anything online, and never will. Otherwise the cards are very common and easy to find.

5. would it be better to just get a graphics card with a av inputs
Well yes, but the gfx cards available with the TV tuner have sick gfx core, like GF2 MX (mostly), and they are expensive, however the recording features in such cards and TV quality is quite better.

Super Video cable is different from the one U think ( the red, Yellow white cables are different)

yes, quality may differ, I have a cheap card with good quality but there are more expensive cards that look worse. I don't really know well which ones are good and which aren't, my card is a Lenco tv-card, but an old model.

2. will i be able to watch movies on it through a vcr
probably, by connecting it through the svideo-in or "normal" connection.

3. will i be able to record tv shows or famiely videos with it
in AVI format yes, but probably not on an external vcr, unless you have tv-out

4. were do i get one
at your local hardware store.

dunno.

AFAIK most tv cards have a connection for the yellow cable (I refer to that ad "normal" connection, since I dont know the name.). The red and white ones are for audio and can be connect through the line-in of your soundcard.
Also, if your vcr can use SCART you can use a scart>svideo adapter, which gives a much better picture.

I got a lifeview tv card, it's the latest model they offere, I seen more expensive one from other company and offere about the same, but my is about 2nd most expensive *I'm taking pinicle video capture card in, since they're for professional, and cost about $200+US I believe*in here they sell for $445AUD*
most older card cheaper one, you can use third party software eg: virtual dub, ms movie maker, and many more ofcoz, my the driver STILL SUCK!!! I got it 1 yr ago, the quality is simply AMAZING to watch, my friend got other brand and my is best card there in terms of quality, but their mpg recording is DAMN SUCK, hope they fix up the driver, they're trying to fix up third party program so ppl can use other program to record as well, but it would likely to take another yr. they do update their driver thought, every 3months or so, unless it's critical, and it support winxp, it's WHQL.

1. basicly they all use phlip tv chipset, just some are older one, and some like my newer chipset, there for there is a different, and also depend on the driver how well they make.
2/3. yes
4. where else but computer shops and online pc store?
5. no, I wouldn't, the reason is, this probably lead to high price in video card and also lead to down grade on performance, unless you don't had free pci slot
6. there is s-video in. composite video in etc.

the card I'm talk about you can go here and take a look so you know what to expect.

they now even had a digital tv capture, so you can capture digital tv as well as analog tv signal with this card
