FFIX with Geforce and Voodoo shots
Can anyone show two pictures of the same thing in both Pete's plugin and Lewpy's one for GeForce? I am deciding whether to get a GeForce or a Voodoo card and it will affect other games in the future, but I want to contrast this between the two plugins. If anyone can post screenshots that can be examined for comparison I would appreciate it.

Also, would it be best (if GeForce was better) to use Pete's D3D or Pete's DX6 D3D?

...hold on, you are actually debating "getting" a voodoo card? WHY? You'd essentially be locking yourself into just a limited selection of software that will run on it, let alone run well. Already new games have come out that simply don't like Voodoo cards. A GF4 Ti4200 can be had on Pricewatch for $135 or less, and you'll be well-off for a while. The graphichs quality absolutely should not be the end-all deciding factor for you. Yeah, the Glide plugin can produce *mildly* better results, but at the expense of a video card that won't go any farther.

a Voodoo card does do FSAA better than GForce cards do. fivefeet8 has shown this many times. But you can achieve excellent FSAA results w/a GForce card if you work at it. Also, as S.SubZero said, Voodoo is going no farther. That is because Nvidia bought them out and did away w/the Voodoo cards, once and for all. So Voodoo is dead, gone, history. Your best would be a GForce Card and the best GPU plugin to use would be Pete's OGL. That should give you nice clear graphics. sincerely, sx/amiga |

Even I have not recommended buying Voodoo cards since 3dfx's demise. There are two scenarios I can see as reason to buy one:- Scenario A 1) You have money to burn 2) You buy a PCI Voodoo5 3) You have a spare monitor, or dual-input main monitor 4) You run it as a secondary display to your main, modern AGP card Scenario B 1) You have literally no money to spend 2) They are the only cards you can find in your budget, and they are better than what you already have |

Actually, the Voodoo5 is great for emulation. If you plan to stick only with PSX emus, I say that the Voodoo5 is a great choice (see fivefeet8's screenshots with Lewpy's plugin + 4xFSAA). However, this card won't be able to play newer games, and will suffer of serious performance problems if you try to run any heavier game. If you have enough money, I say get a Geforce in your AGP slot and a Voodoo5 PCI.

A PSX (even a modded one) costs less than a Voodoo5, and is a complete gaming system. The issue here isn't "what's good for emulation".. You aren't going to say "Voodoo5 is the best thing ever in the history of the world to happen to any emulator ever, and any other card is such absolutely unreliable unusable inferior junk that I give them to my dogs as chew toys".. When we say "Glide does it better" we mean MARGINALLY better. MARGINALLY as in "If someone told me the V5 does good emulation and that's ALL it does, and a GF4 does *almost* as good emulation (like, 99.99994% as good) but will also run pretty much any game for the PC slated to come out in the next 18 months" then I would snap that V5 with my own two hands. FSAA is absolutely not the only reason to get a Voodoo card, and I would not like to see people buying Voodoo cards and then realizing later that they can't do anything else with them except play old PSX games. Voodoo cards are NOT a future-proofed investment.

sadly, getting a voodoo card nowadays isn't the right thing to do. as newer PC games come out, the voodoo series are left out. although you may find that nothing beats the superior FSAA of these cards, still getting a geforce 2 would be your best bet. take my case, Scenario A as stated by Lewpy. i really bought the card because i am a fanatic and i miss very much glide. times change though, as i recently bought a geforce 4 ti 4200 to cope up with compatibility issues with newer PC games. (i know the games of today run with the voodoo 5, but you will find how to make it work and trust me, it's not worth it.) in other words, go get an ATI Radeon or a Geforce 2. |

I agree with Lewpy and Zephon.. If your gonna be mainly using your graphics card for psx emulation or N64 emulation, then yeah, a voodoo 5 would be nice.. But only the voodoo 5 pci is worth buying because it allows you to in the future when you start wanting to play newer pc games, to get a Modern agp graphics card.. If you want to be able to play psx games and future PC games now, then get newer graphics cards like the geforce 2, 3, or 4, or the Radeon's.. BTW.. The quality of the voodoo 5's FSAA and graphic quality is noticeably better.. If want to see some shots of FF9 then check the screenshots section.. There is more than enough of them there running on different graphics cards.. I have both an agp geforce 4 ti 4600 and a voodoo 5 5500 pci.. My voodoo 5 5500 pci gets used more simply because I mostly play emulated games, but I am relieved to know that my geforce 4 will be able to let me play future PC games as well.. But I don't use it much.. Hmm.. Maybe I should sell it since I am not into PC games that much at the moment.. One more thing to remember is this: the cpu that you pair your video card with also determines the video performance you will get..
