Well my personal experience with this card is say Zero, but in more gneneral I can give only general recommendations, like installing the drivers again, then adjusting power setting in your BIOS to give some extra power to the card.

lockups? odd. I heard though that the latest catalyst drivers cause lockups on various systems. You might want to try older drivers, or download rage3dtweaker (www.rage3d.com) and play a bit with the settings.

catalyst is slower but stable compared to the drivers that came with my card and if you have problem with the radeon driver uninstall it 1st by following the guide here http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthre...eadid=33606840

Well Liquid I have a Radeon64 vivo and I've had no problems with it since I've owned it, seems these 8500's have had problems with certain ppl/systems and I couldnt say why as theres plenty ppl over at rage3d that are very happy with them and have no problems.
I will buy ATI's new card as well unless the new NV30 is significantlly faster/cheaper.
Not that I'm an ATI fanboy or nothing

this is terrible. i uninstalled the drivers like they said in rage3d. reinstalled them and it still doesn't work. i got the card to work before so i know it should be running on my system. it's just that windows detects and recognizes it but i think all other programs don't fully recognize it. like in powerdvd xp it says no video accelerator detected. i remember it saying ati technologies or something when i had the card running properly..........

happened to me as well (the powerdvd thing), and when I finally got it recognized it was choppy, until I tried certain beta drivers.

Jaz> Indeed, at rage3d there are people who are very happy with their card. Either that or they hate em.

eyerule after uninstalling the driver you must also manually remove the registry entry cause the ****ty ati uninstaller does not remove it, the first time i installed the catalyst driver it say something like unable to update registry and it fu__ my system so i have to manually remove it in safe mode

I hate ATI.

I got pissed and yanked my radeon 7500 and put in my old riva 4 meg card until my geforce 4 mx comes.

The radeon drivers that came with the card were crap and they refused to install several times on windows 2k.

eYeRuLe, your card is most likely fine. ATI just doesnt know crap about making drivers.

i had choppy playback in powerdvd as well.

No matter what u have you dont EVER install the drivers that come with the cd...come on people!!!! how old are u???

You always use the latest drivers from the website.
The drivers on CDs are usualy super old from the shelf life of the card sitting there till someone baught it.

Also, download some tweaking software and disable hyperz.
Also make sure u have directx 8 installed.

I have a nice 56K connection or should I say 48k. I don't download a whole lot of stuff. and in the case of ati they dont realease driver updates all that often.

For psx emulation the boxed drivers work fine. I dont play computer games so I dont need bleeding edge released drivers.

Most of my problem is that my via chipset doesnt like the radeon and the radeon doesnt like the via chipset. I had several freezes and lock ups with the radeon.

Nvidia chipsets seems to work better with my board. thats all.

Alright... Double check the drivers you installed, there are 2 sets: Made by ATI, and powered by ATI. If your card isn't made by ATI, then download the powered by ATI drivers. Try messing around with driver properties, too. Also, make SURE you have DirectX 8. You never know, could be your mobo or PSU.

Post your specs, along with DirectX version... Be sure to include motherboard info.

When I first got my Radeon, I had problems with it... After some poking around, found it to be a faulty windows install.
