do we need to use special ide cable for use with ultra ata 100?
i'm thinking of buying a new mobo and while surfing on asus site,there is this article that says the mobo came with ata 66 ide cable

you will need 2 requirements to fully use an ATA-100 drive.

1) An ATA 100 IDE controller
2) An ATA 66 cable

ATA 66 and higher drives use a finer cable (and shorter cable). You can use an ATA-33 cable however you will only be limited to ATA-33 speeds. (note: ATA-66 cables have blue end that attaches to the motherboard)

Secondly, If your motherboard does not support ATA-100 then you won't get ATA-100. You'll need to invest in an ATA-100 controler card, which costs apporximately $40.

Promise technology makes great ATA cards, for a realtivly low price...

But like stated above, ATA66/100 uses an 80 pin conductor cable. If you do get one, make shure to place the master drive on the end, and the slave on the middle connector. Also, ATA uses Cable Select, so make shure to set the drives properly. Or there is a chance it wont work...

You are correct about the cable, but I need to correct you about how the IDE's are setup.

Where you place the Master & Slave drives on the cable is not important, unless you set each device to cable select mode.

Normally, these devices are set to Master mode by default when you buy them. Just manually set whatever your second device is to Slave mode, and place it on the cable *it does not matter if it is the middle or the end*. Your bios will detect them correctly.

I've been doing this for years, and in fact I am running my sytem optimally under a setting which you said would not work.

IDE 0,0 ATA-100 HD (on the middle cable, set to master)
IDE 0,1 PIO-0 ZIP (on the end of the cable, set to slave)

if this didn't work IDE 0,0 would report as a ATA-33 drive.

without using the setup i stated above, and especially with only a single drive on the ribbon, you have a moderate risk of data corruption... in the morning i will explain why, and give you a link...

(ATA-66/100 uses SCSI "style" interface, with the last drive termination, and electrical charge buildup... will tell more)

so then...does that mean ata 100 just use ata 66 cable?
no need for ata 100 cable?
wouldn't the transfer speed be compromised then?

Yup, you got the idea.

ata-66 and ata-100 both use the same cable.
There is no special cable "only" for ata-100.
