Is it just me or are newsgroups illegal Yeah there is a lot of incomplete files on Newsgroups but its usually your Newsgroup providers fault not the poster. Oh well, someone better lock this before it gets crazy.

Newsgroups are perfectly legal. That's why your ISPs provide servers for them.

10. The overwhelming majority of these newsgroups provide a legitimate forum for discussion of a whole variety of subjects of great interest to their users and newsgroups are a vital part of the open, democratic and interactive nature of the Internet.

The completion of files for my ISP is crap. Most of the files are missing.

Does anybody know of a good free newsgroup server to connect to?

RZetlin....

It's probably not your ISP but the program you're using. I use GrabIt or ZeoNews.

You'll find a lot of newsgroup readers or whatever here

http://www.easynews.com/yenc/windows.htm

If it is your ISP... I did a search on google and searched for "free newsgroups" and I got these sites:

http://www.freenewsgroups.com/listing.html

http://www.elfqrin.com/mine/nntpserv.html

It's up to you what you do there.

Come one people. Ebola is right, we all know what hes talking about, if your in a "legal" newsgroup (that sounds like a contradiction) then I highly doubt that there are going to be ANY files you would actually want.

Also, Forte Agent is the best Newsgroup program. Or PixNewsPro is also another good one.

P.S. - AthenaNews.com has cheap Newsgroup usage, $5.95 a month and 1GB a DAY of transfers, for you know, all those "legal" files on Newsgroups.

Thanks for your help ShadowDancer.

I am already using XNews to view newsgroups, so I think the problem is with my ISP. My ISP has a low retention and low completion rate of files.

I have to check these newsgroup server out. If anybody knows more please tell me.

Newsgroups can only accept postings like text. No single posting can be very large in size.

Like I said, newsgroups are totally legal. Also, the guy said incomplete files and not "Where can I get WarCraft III?". There's a difference.

Remember keywords are NEWSGROPUS ARE LEGAL!

Something more illegal would be Kazaa and Napster. For God's sake, your ISP provides newsgroup servers for you.

Unless you can prove otherwise......

Or maybe a mod can prove otherwise too if it's legal or illegal. I think it's legal cuz this thread hasn't been locked. I'm pretty sure some mod must have read this thread.

Or compare it like this, the Web itself is legal, it's just what someone puts on it on a certain site... same with Usenet. And for those who use it just for downloading stuff, try looking through some of the discussion groups, there are some interesting discussions out there as long as you avoid the kiddie/h@x0r groups .

Very true, Newsgroups are as legal as the web itself. Sure most is legal but most is also illegal, it just depends where your at. But when you use the word "files" and "newsgroups" in the same sentence it usually translates to "illegal."

I still don't agree. I like to pick up Farscape episodes off of Kazaa, or sometimes perhaps a newsgroup. Now these files can be up to 450 megs, but they're just a TV show. Kinda like setting the VCR to record, only my VCR sux, so I do this. Is that illegal?

Yes and no. If you own the video or DVD already, no it's no illegal, but if you don't it is.
In theorry using a VCR to tape movies from TV is illegal.
Anyhow, like it has been said, newsgroups + files normally = illegal, or borderline illegal.
As such, I'm gonna close this thread.
