need help installing processor

ok, according to sisoft, i have a U6 socket/slot processor. is this socket/slot compatible with a socket 7 processor? also, how do you remove a processor? you take the heatsink/fan combo off by unlocking those metal things then how do you take the processor out? and then when i put one in does it detect it automatically like ram or do i somehow have to "install" it? i'd appreciate any help on this subject

There is a lock a mostly a metal or plastic lock on it. You have to pull it up then it unlocks the processor and you take the processor out carefully. Once you install the processor ur processor is automatically installed if its installed in correctly.

From your specs I can see that you have a K6 processor (or is that your new processor?), which is a Socket 7 processor.

Yo remove a CPU you have to take off the heatsink and fan (unhinge the metal clip from the plastic retentions on the socket), then pull up on the metal lever and take it out. When installing a new one fit the processor into the socket, pull down on the metal lever and put the heatsink/fan back on. The motherboard should detect what CPU you have when you boot up, there's no "installation" necessary.

Pentium 3's use socket 370, so unless you get a new motherboard you cannot just swap out a K6-2 for a Pentium 3.

that depends on your motherboard. You migh be able to change some jumpers to increase the FSB. There might also be some settings in options as well. Check your motherboard.

K6-2s aren't multiplier locked so you should be able to overclock them by changing the multiplier. You could overclock by FSB, but in some cases this could cause certain PCI cards and harddrives not to function properly since the PCI bus will be overclocked.

Anyways, the speed of a processor is the multiplier times the FSB.
For a K6-2 500 that would be a multiplier of 5 times a FSB of 100 = 500.

To overclock there are probably some jumpers on your motherboard which you need to adjust to change the multiplier. I would consult your motherboard manual to figure out which jumpers they are. For 550, you will want to change the multiplier to 5.5 and leave the FSB the same.

don't forget to discharge yourself from any electrostatic charge you may have, touch any water pipe or touch the computer case if you have a properly grounded AC outlet otherwise your old or new processor will die!
Do this before puting out or in the processor

The jumpers are in a different location on every motherboard. What is the brand and model of your motherboard, it usually says what it is named in the first boot-up screen, most motherboard makers let you download their manuals from the net.

i have the same mobo, tho compaq may have changed it, anyway, on mine it shows a diagram saying x.x being the multiplier, and next to it are the jumpers, if u know what off is and on is then its real easy, i cant get mine to stay stable at 550 though. it freezes before it finishes detecting ide drives, either that or it will start to load windows then BSOD i also have a huge heatsink and a fan that runs at 5416 rpms.. dont think heat's the problem!

well i found the right jumpers, and i switched them to equal a multiplier of 4 to see what would happen. i loaded up windows and it said now it was 400 mhz. so then i try to set it to 5.5. it either freezes loading windows or has a windows protection error. also i tried to take the heatsink/fan off just for lack of something better to do and after i unlocked it, it wouldnt come off. its as if its glued to there or something.

if you take the heatsink off and start the beast overclocked, your next posting will come from a new PC (at least a new processor, very likely also a new motherboard).

The heatsink on my Pentium was glued down. Maybe it's the same case here. Try gently twisting it or try to pry it off. Anyways, I don't think it's worth overclocking your processor. You won't really gain that much of an increase and it could damage your CPU. A K6 doesn't really scale higher than 550 Mhz.

well demigod, there are some people that got a k6-2 450 to go to 660 and stay stable  also, when your computer is made by a big corporation like compaq, then most likely all hardware is soldered in.

it's rare but you could look for a k6-3, it sports a better FPU, and L2 cache, making the onboard cache the L3 cache, ive never used one but i imagine there would be a good fps increase! btw, they only go to 450 IIRC, and are socket7, but even with the 50mhz less it will be significantly faster than a k6-2 500.
