They are real media files. You need a Real player for playing them.

Yep.

There is a program for converting rm files to avi, but blasted can I remember what its called or where it can be downloaded. However there is a few other tricks you can use.

1. Switch off use Optimized video display in realplayer
2. download hypercam and use it to make to motion capture the realplayer windows as it playsback the rm file
3 download tmpgemc and use that to convert the avi file to mpeg.

Hey beta, but how about the quality of the file? Cause most of .rm files sucks hard..and converting to one of the extensions that use most of the size.

It won't help improve the quality and more than likely this action will end up increasing the size of the file. The only reason for doing such an action is to burn it to vcd.

That little tool is called Tinra ("This Is Not Real Anymore"). You can get it here:

http://www.geocities.com/tinra04/

I think DivX-Digest has it too.

It's a simple command line tool, and when it works it's better than using a screen capture program. BTW, Tinra only works if you have Realplayer 7 or 8 installed (not RealOne!).

RealPlayer8 (Basic) free download:

http://www.real.com/R/RC.RPC1204_c1....1&dc=624623622

When you install it, choose the "Custom Setup", unclick all those crappy boxes that ask which news items you're interested in (none), and also unclick the boxes for putting RealPlayer in your taskbar, etc.
You should register the first time you use it (basically just giving your email address) otherwise you'll have to click "Cancel"...and "Cancel" again in the registration pop-up windows every time you open the program.

If your RealPlayer install-kit comes bundled with RealDownload and RealJukebox, you can uninstall them from "Start menu (Programs)", or from your "Add/Remove Programs", or by deleting those folders from your "c:\Program Files" folder. (RealDownload creates a storage folder called "MyDownloads", RealJukebox creates a storage folder called "MyMusic" -- delete those and any other leftover folders manually.)

However, DO NOT download or upgrade to RealONE !!!
It's a piece of crap with spyware -- harmless to your computer/privacy, but it will hog your ISP bandwidth and system memory by bombarding you with streaming ads. RealONE also has reported XP issues, and it makes itself your default player when you install it (which I doubt you'd want), in which case you'll have to go reset all your file associations manually.
Therefore, stay away from RealONE unless you're a masochist. :bash:

~ ~ ~

Because TINRA is a hack, it doesn't always work for rm to avi conversion. Occassionally it will stall right at the start of converting a .rm file (which can't be helped, it just depends on the particular Real file.) Adobe Premiere also doesn't like this type of hack-converted avi file, so use VirtualDub for editing instead.

If you only want the audio track from a Real file, dBpowerAMP Converter can change the rm to mp3 or wav (after you get the Real plug-in from the dMCconverter site).
Both TINRA and dBpowerAMP can only do conversion of Real video/audio in real time mode, so you have to just sit there and wait for the file to play through to the end.

~ ~ ~

quoting ryu_joko:
how can i get more fps ?

To adjust streaming options, go the the RealPlayer menu bar:
View-->Preferences...-->
(then use the Connection, Transport, Performance tabs).

For making your own RealPlayer files (using RealProducer), set everything to the highest possible performance. Anything encoded below 225kbps will suck ass. Real video compression format is not very good for capturing soft lighting or soft-focus images.

by the way, the sound syn is very bad, at the start is maybe ok, but later on, the sound synchronisation is lost by alot, and I mean alot somewhere between 4 to 10second.
I use TINRA to do it. it's not really worth it.

More than likely, the fps problem cannot be helped. If the rm file was made for a 28.8k or 56k connection, the fps will be bad when there is lots of motion. This is just the way it is and converting the file into another format, such as mpeg or avi, will not fix the problem. Also, if you only want the audio track use streambox ripper (can convert mp3, rm, and wav files).

A .rm file encoded with low fps can't be helped any more than a mp3 with cheap 64kbps encoding: even if your change the format or re-encode to a higher bitrate, the filesize is bigger but quality won't be improved because that data was lost when it was initially compressed.
If you have video-out on your graphics card, I've found that the picture on RealPlayer files looks better when displayed with a television monitor. (won't help your low framerate, though.)

Tinra is just point-and-click simple to use it.
Click the green icon (named "Tinra GUI") to run it from the folder where you unzipped the program.
(Tinra Graphic User Interface pictured in attachment, below.)

Sniper's right about the sound synchonization being off when you convert the rm files to avi. You have to use a video editing program if you want to re-sync it, deciding for yourself if it's worth the effort.
