Are there any other mySQL hosts that are free, I mean, I'm picky and I don't like the pop-unders that coolfreepages.com has and lycos.co.uk has been acting strange on my browser. Today, I received by e-mail my vBulletin 3.0.0 public beta and I was wondering what servers support it that are free.

Re: Free webhosting sites.

if i were you guys, and if i have either cable or dsl, host it yourself!!! i suggest a program called apache for web hosting. It's free, and your space is only limited to your hard drive

Interesting suggestion, but you should also include these tips/warnings:

1. Your ISP might not like you doing that. Be sure to check your TOS first.

2. If you are assigned a dynamic IP address then your site can be difficult to find. You'll have to use a service such as dyndns.org in this case or talk your ISP into letting you have a static IP address.

3. If you're behind a hardware firewall, set it so port 80 redirects to your PC. If you aren't behind any firewall (software or hardware), install one.

4. If you have a computer you don't regularly use on your LAN, install Linux or *BSD on it and set it up as your webserver. Then have your router redirect port 80 to that computer. This way, you don't have to always have your computer running, and httpd won't be eating up the CPU and memory resources on your computer.

5. Keep in mind download speeds for your visitors depend on your upload speed and the number of visitors you have. If you typically have more than 5-10 visitors at once, or want to make large files available to broadband users, then hosting on your own computer isn't an option. It's just too slow.

and may I know what the website address will be?

Re: Free webhosting sites.

your address would be the same as your ip address.

and ramsusx, i already have your 5 warnings covered.

for the ip address problem, i just use cjb.net, and change the forwarding link everytime i change my ip.

my cable internet has the upload limit of 30KBps, which is pretty fast if you think about it.

here is the site done by my friend alias BeBop Cloud, hosted by my best friend alias MajinTrunks (no not the lamer asking for roms here at ngemu, but a different MajinTrunks... gotta hate duplicate screen names) The site is being hosted at a 1700+ win2000, and a 1 gig of ram, dsl (upload limit of 15KBps).

Re: Free webhosting sites.

gamer, do you mean my website address would be like:190.162.93.64??(no, it's not my ip address)

Yes, you have to have your computer on for the website to be up. Your address on the Internet is the same as your IP address as well, unless you buy a domain name or get a subdomain set up with a DNS.

http://www.dyndns.org/ offers free subdomains with DNS (as opposed to a redirection service). They also have clients you can install that automatically update their DNS server every time your IP address changes. It's also free if you just get a subdomain. If you own a domain name you can use that as well.

Gamer1:
30KB/s eh? Yeah, that's twice my upload speed.

Anyway, the 5 tips and stuff are just for people who haven't tried this stuff before.

I never much liked the idea of updating something manually whenever my IP address changes. I prefer having an actual name attached to my IP via DNS over redirection anyway, so cjb.net is out for me.

I have a Pentium 233Mhz PC with 64MB SDRAM and a 2GB HD with Debian Linux set up as a webserver (Apache with PHP and MySQL), a mail server, and an ftp server (real users only). So far it seems to be working with dyndns.org, but I only tried setting all of this up tonight. Everything's secured down, and the only ports available (redirected from my router) are the absolute minimum needed (21, 25, 80).

I think I'll install squirrelmail on it so I can easily check the mail on this machine from my other computer.

Yes. The Apache Webserver has been ported to Windows for quite some time. You can find a Microsoft Installer (.msi) package at the following location:
http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi

apache_2.0.46-win32-x86-no_src.msi would be the file you want.

Install that and then start up the httpd service. Type in http://127.0.0.1/ to see your server on your computer (127.0.0.1 is a loopback address, it always takes you to the computer you're on). I'd edit httpd.conf so that the webserver documents are located in c:\www and your cgi-bin is c:\cgi for brevity.

If you want Perl, PHP, and MySQL, you'll have to download and install the Windows versions of those and install them yourself. Getting them to work correctly could be somewhat of a pain though. I also heard someone mention a packaged installer that includes Apache, PHP, and MySQL for Windows (Triad something?).

Re: Free webhosting sites.

I wouldnt use .cjb like above. Your addy becomes www.yourname.cjb.net. Try www.tk (type that in). It gives u free forwarding like www.yourname.tk. Pritty cool. I found web1000 ftp support to be UBER slow.
