Question Is this considered piracy?

I own the PAL versions of Final Fantasy 7-9. The PAL conversions of these games are horrible (black borders and slow gameplay). If I "acquire" the NTSC versions of these through the net, should I feel guilty?

SONY would consider that if you want a game you buy it, so yes they would want you to feel very guilty. I personally think there's nothing wron with the PAL versions, (and FF9 has no black borders!), and I hope you mean buy a NTSC game of eBay, otherwise the mods won't like u!!

To be honest I c no point in 'getting' the NTSC version.

And with regards to guilt, hmmm ..............

Depends on the Definition of "acquire". If you mean buying imports from websites such as www.cex.co.uk . Then we have no problems.

However if you mean isos then we do have real issues. Check the rules before proceeding any further with this topic.

This was supposed to go under "Everything else PSX".

I'm not here to ask where I can download ISO's, but how this situation fits the reader's sense of morality and whether I'm doing something wrong as far as the law is concerned.

Good point. Moved (How did I miss that )

BTW If I'd have thought you were asking for isos I would have closed it

Don't these kind of PAL-NTSC convertors just make the game playable on different systems? The performance/appearance of the game stays the same right?

the convertors allow the game to play on different televisions. the system doesnt have that much to do with it iirc.. the convertors just change the frequency so that images are viewable. the image from pal>ntsc tends to be strectched tho since they run at slightly different resolutions (ntsc>pal yields borders)

So basically there is no point in using a converter. The games are just programed that way.

well yes and no, as Bgnome said the image will get streched, so u can assume that the boarders will be removed when going to NTSC, differenct frequencies and res etc......

it is not piracy...

cause you got the original game...

if that is piracy then making ISO image is a piracy too...

Dunno though I agree with you but they could agrue that since he owns the PAL version and not the NSTC it would be considered piracy but thats a touchy subject. Like I said though I agree with you.

I think its definitely ought to be piracy.

Two versions are totally different things IMO.

What about converting using hardware converters (not touching the software side)?

Technically it's piracy but I see no reason to feel guilty, since you paid for the game and the differences are mostly technical. It's the same with the Bios: Most of us have a playstation, but some use a different bios for emulation than they have in their PSX. (I guess about no-one-at-all really extracts the bios from the psx, about 100% download...) From my personal point of view, as long as everyone gets paid for his work, it should not be too much of a problem.
