Cant use diagonals on gamepad

Does anyone know why I wouldnt be able to use the diagonal directions. I'm using a sidewinder gamepad and up, down, left right work fine, but when I try to do a diagonal movement it isnt recognised - any ideas? The gamepad works fine with other apps.

sounds like you mapped POV to the d-pad.

Does it have an analog controller which you can switch on/off?

Nope, just a digital pad.

I have a analog joystick connected to usb (the pad is on the game port) - could this be confusing it? Maybe I should disable the stick?
