24-bit is still better than 16-bit though (24 = 16 million colors, 16 = 65 thousand colors). With this logic I don't think 32 bit was all that necessary for Voodoo cards, since they always rendered internally at 24-bit and sampled down to 16-bit (which was why their image quality was always so good). I always thought 16-bit looked pretty good (well, good enough for me anyways) so I stuck with it, although in the newer games 32-bit color does come through.

An alpha channel is always a good thing. Thusly why certain people are looking forward to 64 bit colour.

Voodoo's had the best 16-bit color. I stick with 32-bit on my GeForce, as otherwise I do notice banding, and not just in textures.

so, 16bit color + color dithering = 32 bit color

any i also noticed on geforce based cards, when playing on 16 bit color, if you look closely enough, there are many bits of squares (unnoticable) on the screen. 32 bit however makes the squares disappear.

this can be easily distinguished by Grandia 2 PC (Ryuudo's Sky Dragon slash)

and RTCW.
