winXP pro shutdown problem.
I can't shutdown my windowsXp pro properly, it just hangs at the "windows is saving your settings" screen. Any help would be appreciated.

One of your background programs is probably not closing when asked. Use msconfig to switch off all background tasks to see if that fixes the problem. If it does, systematically add each one again until the problem reoccurs. Then look for an update for that program.

My system used to do that too (though i'm running Windows 98). There is a Win98 conflict with some types of motherboard, where you have to adjust the setting for number of active USB ports in your startup BIOS. I don't know if this applies to WinXP or your particular motherboard situation, but you can look into disabling a couple of the USB ports and see what happens.

Are you sure that the shutdown sequence is actually "hanging"? Because windows XP does have an extremely long shutdown sequence, sometime it could take even a minute for your PC to fully shutdown.

I had wait for about 15 minutes for that "saving your settings" screen, so I assume that it's hanging.

Ok.... i'm pretty sure there is a problem there. First make sure there ate no programs running in the background when you shutown your PC. If that does not fix it there is a way to customize the things windows XP does when it shuts down. I cant remember exactly where or how to do this, but i'm sure there are plenty of places on the net to find out how to do it. Try http://www.tweakxp.com/tweakxp/ they should have something on thier that tells you about shutting down XP faster. Oh yeah i also heard something about XP having shutdown problems with Nvidia's graphics cards. I'm not sure weather it was only for Geforce based cards or anything but it could be worth a look.

I myself have had two Geforce cards, a Geforce 2 Ultra and the one i have now, the Geforce 4 440MX. I have had no problems with either and would not want anything else. I'm not complaining about it, i'm just saying that i have heard when xp first came out there were a few problems with geforce based cards. I dont know if it was true or anything becuase i didnt really experience any problems so i didnt worry about it. I'm just trying to help. I was just suggesting a few things to check and look into. About the page file thing, i'm sure there is more options than just that. Like the saving settings and stuff can be turned off, i'm not sure.

I too have experienced problems shutting down Windows XP. It would get to the "saving your settings" and just freeze. I can't even move the mouse or anything, I have to manually turn it off. I'm hoping MS will release some patch that'll fix it. Still, I rarely turn my computer off anyways so it isn't that big of an issue, just somewhat annoying.

Have you been getting the updates that are regularly posted by Microsoft. There have been heaps and generally if there is a problem in XP they fix it pretty soon. I recommend you run the Windows Update at least once or twice a week. If you have then there is definitely something wrong. You might want to run a virus checker such as Nortan Antivirus and make sure that it has been updated. Another thing could be to remove any programs that are not required, from the system tray and shut them down before you turn off your pc. If this problem has just started recently then it could be a new program or piece of hardware that is causing a conflict somewhere. Just a few things to try. If worse comes to worse something could be corrupted and requires to be reinstalled. Basically check everything like this and see what happens. There is nothing much more you could to do. Except probably format and start again. I hope this helps.

I think I have one of the first editions of XP Pro, have never used Windows Update, yet it never took that long to shut down. If ever, it only took 10-15 seconds tops, and that's with 10 icons on my system tray ( and prolly a lot more running in the background without icons). Could be something you installed with spyware that's somehow hanging up in the background whenever you shut down, Evil Squall. Maybe a shot of Task Manager with a list of the apps running just before you close the comp after a period of use might help.

Shiori you might want to. There has been a lot of security and critical updates that fix a lot of problem with XP. There was also a recent one that addressed an issues with games that experianced a performance drop when run on XP. The updates have really made XP that much better and more stable in areas too. It would be a mistake to not update it seeing its free and all you get out of it is better perfomance, more features and better security. You might want to try it sometime. I have had XP for ages and i have always been updating it using windows update. I have experanced no problems so far and my pc shuts down faster then you could probably imagine. Speed is almost everything to me. My pc has to run smooth and fast seeing i use it quite abit. In fact i am an avid game player and have an extremely large range of games. When XP was first released there was somewhat of a compatability issue with some games, for example Need For Speed Porsche. It ran quite choppy in frame rates. But after they released the games compatability update, there is no problems and it even runs heaps better than on ony other OS.

My machine shuts down in about 5~10 secs, and boots in about 10~20 secs. It is bliss. You can't directly d/l the patches, but you can download them for storing on your computer. If you personalise Windows Update, and enable the Windows Update Catalog, you can d/l them from there.

Err, no thanks, I'm not really that concerned about security anyway, since my computer's 75% of the time offline, and Mr.McAfee with his brand-spankin' new virus definition update takes care of those little buggers attached in email. And hearing that it takes HOURS for an update, with internet connectivity here based on a per-minute charge, AND with no way to save them on disk, It's simply not worth it. So I'm running Win2K with SP2 instead. Killua: Malaking gastos yan pag nag windows update ka... [edit] You can save those updates? how?

Killua, As Lord Kane has stated you can customize it to download how ever you want. But i dont see any problem with using windows update. Its quick, fast, easy and downloads at a great speed, for me that is. Shiori, Hey theres no probs there, i was just letting you know. I didn't realise how your internet connectivity was handled. Over here i pay once for the year and that is it. I get unlimited downloads and unlimited time online. The only draw back is that i get disconnected every 3 hours. But hey you cant have everything. I kinda prefered Windows Me compared to the rest (excluding XP that is), i just seemed to have better compatability with everything. I never had a problem with it. :P About the updates I'm not too sure how to get them to download so you can keep them, maybe Lord Kane can answer that.

Yeah, like I said. Windows Update Catalog allows you to do that. I've got a stupidly fast net connection at uni. I'd send you a CD with it on, but it would probs end up being expensive

I think u must do a fresh install, then backup your files and update ur winxp if not pirated (Of course u will be damned if u update it in pirated edition), also dont forget to use tweakxp a 3rd party edition.

There is a small problem with using Tweak XP. You must pay for the full verssion, it is not a free program. If your willing to pay the price then thats ok. Tweak XP will allow you to tweak a lot of things that you would not be able to do with out it. Or it just makes it easier for people who dont know what to do. I have never used and would only recomend it if you knew what you were doing. This is because there is a slight chance something could go wrong and screw up some stuff.
