Is this the end of stupid games?

I was just thinking... there are far fewer just plain STUPID and weird console games than there used to be. I'm sure this is due to the increase in the price of game developing, and the fact that Next Gen consoles are so complex you need huge staffs of musicians, artists, programmers, game designers, marketing, etc. Haha, it's a shame though... back in the NES days the stupid games were a dime a dozen! Old PC games too... like that game where you have to put together hamburgers while dodging evil Ketchups and stuff... I forgot the name, agh! But those kinds of games were alot of fun.

Now the closest things are games based on annoying TV shows and stuff, but they don't rival the weirdness of the old skool. I guess the really silly games have shifted from commercial projects, to fun tasks that people program in Java and Flash on websites just for the fun of it, eh?

Perhaps.. but I find the quality of games has degraded somewhat. The Final Fantasy games were at their height during the SNES days but went downhill when Square migrated to the PSX.

Depends on how you define "stupid". Some American gamers called Tokimeki Memorial "stupid".

I bet it's the Metal Gear crowd.

I think you should call it "original games"
that's a far more polite term.

games like megamanx will never be stupid, commander keen r0x0rz.
indeed, classics, or originals are the best ones....
who could forget the best fps(don't argue, it's the truth): DOOM
why: because it's very simple, SHOOT. every game nowadays has to have a lame story for the same thing: SHOOT. in doom there was no such thing as a distracting story, just shoot. that's why serious sam is so succesfull, just shoot without minding the story, which isn't there anyway

Eface, I hated Doom.

But I think that stupid games will last forever. There's always an ill concieved plot, or a horrible control system right around the corner. And hey, let's not forget Fantavision!

I'm talking STUPID games... not bad games... like I said, the game where you fight evil ketchups and try to make hamburgers. Or the Michael Jackson game where you fight enemies by doing the moonwalk and spins... Or the Shaquille O'Neal fighting game... Or the Michael Jordan windy city action game where you throw basketballs at your enemies. Or the spot game, where you're the old 7-up logo red spot with sunglasses.

Many games are arguably good or bad. And not all stupid games are bad... they're just really bizarre and silly

The problem is that recent games and consoles are always trying to be like reality. The most succesfull games nowadays are with orchestral music and realistic graphics. Wich make them not so cool anymore, since what makes a game fun is that its completely different from our world.

I love Doom! It was a great game and started the entire 3D PC revolution. If it wasn't for the brilliant programming abilities of John Carmack we might still be stuck in the Quake 1 days.

Can't wait for the next Doom game. I just hope it runs on my computer

Escape from MONKEY ISLAND isn't a stupid game. not in the sense of above. there are stupid charakters acting and it's big big fun. the game itself is a brilliant adventure game and not stupid at all.

My stupid favourite is new world computing's oldie NUCLEAR WAR coz it was fun anyway.

Aha! Here's the game I was talking about before... it's called Burgertime and here are a couple of screen shots... By the way there are actually two sequels to this... Peter Pepper's (the main character chef guy) Icecream Factory and Super BurgerTime.
