I've got a major problem with WinXP

Alright before I start of let me tell you that I tried every possible thing well almost. I've tried unloading Dll's from the meomry. Ive tried unistalling program and then tried running my pc,i've tried monitoring my system with the Task manager trying to see whether theres a program which I dont know about which might be causing the problem or a file or dll for that matter.Theres nothing else loaded in the meomry except for the typical Xp system files such as winlogon svchpost explorer etc etc. But when thing when i tried sys restore for a short time the problem seemed to overcome but arises again. At the moment running an antivirus sp\oftware for a possible virus detection but that seems rather hard as Ive got the latest ZOne alarm along with black ice defender for so i dont think so that its possib;e for anything to go undetected through the ICNA,along with the latest virus definitions and i scan every program that i download. MY AV is set on manual detection not automatic. wAlrigt enough of the details heres the problem. The problem is that all of a sudden my computers CPU Usage hits 100 percent for no reason at all and stays there. It has no reason i dont run any spoftware which might cause that not in the background or running one for that matter. Now because of it the computer of mine lags. I cant give it instruction instead for one command to execute it takes a millenium to be over with it. so anyone has a sililar problem let me know about it and if a solution that would be great.
Alright heres my Pc config.
WinXP with the absolute lateset XP fixes along with every possible uppdate.
WINXP DUH
P3 850 MHZ
60GN hard disk
creative live sound cad
V3 2000 AGP
US robotics modem
thats all should be enough thanks for the info which u can provide me thanks once again

Try reinstalling windows. Like you said, that is a very serious problem. A reinstall would probably fix it.

No, updating is not the same as reinstalling. There is obviously something seriously wrong with your OS, or there is something seriously wrong with your CPU. I tend to deny the problems which cost money until its unavoidable. Therefore, it MUST be your OS. About the only thing you can do about that is clear the old one off your hard drive, and install a fresh copy. Windows Update just installs the updates that were made after the OS was released.

If you don't have the Windows CD, well, I don't know what to tell you. Close your eyes, count to ten, beat the computer with a baseball bat, and then tap your heels three times, then open your eyes is about all I can recommend.

I think he means that he doesn't want to re-install the OS because he'll have to download all the updates again on his modem. I had situations like this before as well on my Windows 9x system (and on Windows NT as well) but a simple reboot always fixed it. If it's a recurring problem then it's most likely the cause of some program you installed. Try to determine if it's an application program or a kernel program that's lagging the computer (check "Show Kernel Times" in the Performance tab of the Task Manager). If it's a kernel problem, and from what you're describing (and from personal experiences) it most likely is then there's very little you can do about it. Also, try booting into safe mode and checking the system configuration from there.

Just out of curiosity if it is a kernel problem isnt there a solution for it but as i previously said in my past i already done that i even checked the services which are being runned by going to services.msc and checked each and everyone of emto make sure theres not a useless one lying about there but no such luck. but fi there is such a problem what can we do about it besides i dont want to do a clean insall as well as ive got more than 150 programs isntalled on my pc and yes i know everyone of them as to what they do and where they are installed and all as ive got my pc quite organized from the start up menu cateogrization to installing and monotoring changes in my registry.

Ah yes, I remember the good old dialup days. I kept all the updates I wanted on my hard drive because I was doing reformats pretty frequently.

I really don't know what to tell you about this though. I really wish I could be of more help, but I think you might have to bite the bullet and reinstall. I know how horrible it is to wipe all your customizations off. I hardly even bother getting my computer organized anymore, since I reformat so often. (Then again, with Windows XP, I haven't felt a need to reformat in months....) I guess that you just have bad luck.

One thing that I could think of to do though, is to make a ghost image of your hard drive if you have it partitioned. Then you would be free to do a fresh install without losing the option to undo it if you so chose. It would be useful to see if the problem really was your OS.

This has happened to me a few days ago in windows 2000. It was weird because it started when I botted up the computer. When it would boot up the 'System' process would take up ALL of my CPU and whenver I would load something up my computer froze. I just rebooted my machine (using the reset button cause I couldn't do anythin in the OS) while it booted up the 'checking disk for errors screen came up, I let it check for errors but it found nothing. So it continued to boot up and it did it again. So I rebooted a second time using the reset button and this time the check disk for errors screen did not come up and it seemed to have gone away. It was very odd though. I don't why it happened in the first place.

The only real update you need is the security patch for the Universal Plug n' Play. The other updates aren't really necessary, and drivers you should get from the manufacturers.

I never download any Windows Update ****, but my box runs perfect.

Maybe some tweaks in the various WinXP sites will take care of that, specifically those Services tweaks.

Got the problem licked mate. It was the APCM(advance power control management). I thought that might have be causing the problem and so i unchecked and so uptil now no problem's. Let me see. Il run it without it for a few days and well monitor if the problem arises again. Anyways thanks for all the help people. Much appreciated
