Win ME to Win XP???

I have an anthlon 900 with 384 megs of RAM and a TNT2 Pro. I am curently using windows ME. It is constantly giving me errors and crashes often. I am looking for some opinions on whether or not I should upgrade to Win Xp.

download and run microsoft's compatiblity check. That will inform you of any potential problems that will need fixed in order for you to use this OS.

I personally think your system will run WinXP just fine. But you might sacrifice (sp?) compatibilty with some programs (mostly games and emus such as VGS). But WinXP will be a lot more stable than ME, thats for sure.

Definitely upgrade to Win XP, unless you're terribly cramped in the disk space department (like I do )

If you are, you might want to disable hibernation mode and system restore. WinXP will then take just over a gig of space, barebones.

It runs alright, but don't expect to run games or movies on it. I use it to check up on my sister's computer so I don't have to always walk over there.

I just used it to browse, and set my pooter running net streaming apps. It also allowed me to browse to forums after I forgot my password, as it's stuffed in the cookies.

I think if you install IIS on XP Pro, the Terminal Services Web is installed as well. That makes it easy for you to connect and use your machine even on systems that don't have terminal services/remote desktop client installed. Most of the time when I'm at school I just point my browser to http://shadowflare.flaredomain.net/tsweb and I've got instant Remote Desktop. It even supports full screen mode

I've downgraded to Windows 98 due to ME. I've regained 10% of system resources due to 98

make a dual boot. remember you need two partitions on your harddrive. use winxp pro and on the other partition win98 SE. Install win98 first.

If you want to get backward compatibility to some old dos games use the tool VDMsound ( http://ntvdm.cjb.net/ ).

get Wiindows XP.

i had windows ME on this system and, like you said, i had tons of errors and my ram was gone in a matter of 30 minutes when i ran windows me, but since i installed windows xp, my ram is always 50 % used and everything is going smoothly and haven't had a crash (yet).

well, if you're wondering... my system is

500 MHZ pentium 3 coppermine
192 megs of RAM
40 gig HD 7400 RPM (Maxtor)
10 gig HD 7400 RPM (didn't check this one)
16 meg video card (3dfx banshee, poor compatibility with games)
DVD Rom Drive (too loud)
HP Cd writer plus 8100 series (sucks...)
and last but not least...
a power button and a small reset button.
