Do memory cards work in Xenogears?

I can't get memory cards to work in Xenogears. Is there no way to make them work?

Don't double post threads on me. There are a few threads about this, but it seems to be a particularly strange bug in the game itself. Sometimes it will save, sometimes it won't. Try using a new memory card or try one with other saves on it.
