How are RPGs on the PSP?

I keep thinking before they discontinue the PSP store of getting Final Fantasy VII for the PSP. I don't know if I'd like it or not on my PSP 3000. I was wondering about gamers thoughts on playing games like that on the PSP?

You say "before they discontinue the PSP store" so I'm note quite sure what you mean. Did you mean Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII? If that's the case, the game is amazing; and absolutely all RPGs in the PSP, whether they are action based like KH, Crisis Core or turn based like Persona Revelations, Innocent Sin, 3 Portable, etc play superb~.

However, if you meant the PS One Classic FFVII from the PSN...well, that's not getting discontinued any time soon, if ever~.

Well I thought they might stop selling PS store stuff to PSP users soon since they all but abandoned the PSP. The Vita and PSP store seem to be different, particularly you can't transfer / use Playstation games you own on the PS3/PSP on the Vita, which is one reason why I won't buy a Vita.

Don't they all just work in the same PSN network so I doubt it's suddenly gonna block PSP users... Besides, a lot of the games work for both PSP and PS3(as far as I know) so what they might shut down would be only the PSP games section. Although, I thought they work also in Vita so I still see no point in them doing that...

Actually, you can transfer most PSP games you own on the PS3 (that aren't on the PSN PSV store) to the PSV and use them just fine. A lot of the games that are being made available on the PSN PSV store were already playable since day one to begin with. Certain games still aren't supported by the PSV PSP emulator, mostly new games, but every other game is just awaiting the certification from Sony which is what enables them to be displayed on the PSN PSV store~.

The digital PSP store is not going away at all, regardless of the status of the PSP in the west. The same cannot be said about regular stores though (which is what lead me to post my initial reply), Gamestop is a clear example of this who has disposed of their PSP sections already and so has GAME in several of their stores in Europe~.

That is true, and sad... In here it was rare to find PSP games even normally but now they're pretty much gone altogether. I can still find them in some dedicated game stores(and one of the closeby supermarket, though PSV is taking over there). Oh well, luckily there is always the internet and I can order games from there...

I just bought this the other day (on sale psn 9.99/half off) but a few hours ago I was playing it, fighting my way through SEBEC building and I ran into a group of enemies called "yakuza" on the fourth floor. When I used the contact command and tried talking to one it froze my psp and forced a reboot using official firmware... Haven't had that happen again yet, hopefully it's not something I'm going to run into often.

If your PSP is freezing, it's indicative of an overheated device... or a hardware fault if you will.

The PSP should not freeze under any circumstance.

But that aside, the PSP section of the PSN store shouldn't go down any time soon, and Sony is still pushing updates to the PSP at least until the end of this year.

Where RPGs are concerned, though, I think they are decent on the PSP, but after playing the same games on the Vita, I fail to make a "connection" with the "nub" on the PSP. Real analog sticks are so much better.

There are A LOT of great and amazing PSP RPG games.

There's Riviera, Ys, Final Fantasy, Lunar: Silver Star Harmony, Persona 3 Portable, and the upcoming Persona 4 Gold (sp? Something like that).

Also, if you are able to get PSone games on there, your choices are limitless (May I suggest Xenogears? ). It's probably my go to portable for when I want to play true JRPGs.

I just find that hard to believe because I've never had another game crash, and this is at a specific moment. Also, I wasn't playing that long when it happened, and later on played for much longer without an issue. I just avoided contacting those yakuza this time which is fine because you can't actually negotiate with them anyway. It should just come up with a message saying they won't talk to me, hopefully it's just a glitch that caused it and won't have it happen later. I guess it could also be my firmware somehow, I haven't updated for quite awhile.

Well, as noted, Persona 4 Golden is only on PSVita.

But yeah, I agree that there are a lot of great and amazing PSP RPGs.

You forgot Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology (easily one of my favorite PSP RPGs), Brave Story, Magna Carta, Monster Kingdom, Kingdom Hearts, Valkyria Chronicles, etc...

Unfortunately, in my experience, a freezing PSP is usually an indication of a hardware failure. Last time it happened to me, I had to replace the WIFI board of my own PSP.

Last time my psp froze was while I was playing a PSX game converted to play on the psp. So yeah there are times when the psp will freeze if your you arent running the latest FW and you try playing a newer game. If you hack the psp you options open up greatly becuase there are emulators that let you play older consoles. I have both a SNES and GBA emulator on my psp which stay 24/7 on one of the many different cards I have. loading times are much better for certain games if you play the game off a card instead of playing off the UMD Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep being one of them.

Thank you for correcting me RAP,

And dang, I forgot to list Tales of the World also. That one was also fun. I really did enjoy it!

I'm sad there ain't more of the "Tales of..." series translated to English... likely because the cost to hire new voice actors offset the benefits of the translation.

But I know some Tales games are just... really awesome. I rate them even higher than Final Fantasy series way back in the days (after IX). I actually enjoyed Tales of Eternia (which is also a PSP game) more than FF9.

There were only two Tales of... in English for the PSP, one of them didn't even make it outside of Europe (Tales of Eternia aka Tales of Destiny II on the PSX). As for RPGs on the PSP, there are plenty but pretty much all the ones published or made by Atlus are a sure purchase~.
