Don't get me wrong but i see little sense in upgrading right now with such awesome components you have. Your actual PC is a beast in comparison to many here and i'm sure you can play the latest games very well... i personally doubt the upgrade is going to bring you any advantages except for some smaller ones and a big amount of money wasted. I would wait a bit if i would you until the difference between your actual beast and new ones is big enough.

I'm not going to tell you not to upgrade. If I had the dough I'd be doing the exact same thing (well not quite, I usually find the Price to performance to longevity ratio is much more favourable a level or 2 down from the absolute best). I did it 4 years ago (well 3.5) and I'm still happy. And the 920 was the weakest of the original i7 bunch. However I can absolutely 1000% guarantee that during that system's lifetime 16GB will be more than enough. So 32GB is ludicrous, based on how long you kept your current system you'd be lucky to see normal RAM use reach 12GB nevermind the 16 you'll have or 32 you want. It's definitely time for an SSD though. And you're going to need a new cooler for the system as well. One last thing to consider would however be that LGA2011 and Ivybridge represent a tick in Intel's roadmap and next year we'll see a tock (usually meaning a noticeable jump) and you may find yourself quite unsatisfied then and I'd much rather get the tock so honestly I'd wait for that tock.

I put little stock in buying something whether it's a tick or a tock. Just buy what you want, when you want, or you'll be waiting forever. You could always be disappointed by what comes out next. You never know when the next jump will be big or small. Wolfdale was a tick and was a good one. Haswell (the next tock) is rumored to basically follow what Intel has been for a while; integrating more parts into the CPU and increasing the IGP. The days of more and more cores and more and more IPC are slowing. People skipped $150 Sandy Bridges and waited months for more expensive Ivy Bridges that hardly turned out to be faster clock for clock, and run how and don't overclock as well as hoped for, so waiting sometimes doesn't pay off here. Especially since he's at stock with his Core i7 920, moving to a Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge (but not Sandy Bridge E) isn't a total waste. He won't see a miracle jump, no, but those days are over. I went from a Core 2 Duo E8600 to a Core i5 2500K (both at 4GHz) and saw no miracle jump, but it wasn't a total waste (even if the only reason I made the move was because I won the CPU free).

Even if you play the waiting game it's still not a total crash and burn since usually the parts you'd decided to skip are slightly more affordable then so there is still some gain.

Well, for him there's no waiting since there's money already on the line for his current stuff. I'd go with an LGA 1155 system and an SSD, like Schumi suggested. Unless you're running a few VMs at once, are an avid number cruncher (folding, SETI, etc.), or do lots of video encoding in Quick Sync-incapable software, 1155 is a better deal.

Is it still the better deal when you assume he wants to keep it 3+ years though?

My advice to anyone buying a PC nowadays. Get a SSD. I will not build another rig without one from now on. @Schumi. DS always builds like he wont get to do it for a long time, then a short time later he does it again. I don't think it's been that long since he got the last one. Anyways that's his money. He will just get new parts not really a big jump in performance against his last one.

I'm pretty sure he'll keep this system longer. He's been working his way up from a decent high-range system to the top and this definitely is the top aside from the recently upgraded graphics card. Also he wanted to put 32GB RAM in there, there's no way you put that much RAM in a system you're only going to keep for a year or two.

By the way I'd rather get this case http://www.umart.com.au/pro/products...id=2&sid=46707 Oh and make sure the RAM is 1.5v and not 1.65v (in other words your old RAM can't be used, well it can but it's out of spec and not recommended)

Of course not, but the extra cores and hyperthreading of LGA2011 may help over LGA1155 down the line. Especially if you're just going to assume Haswell won't offer anything extra.

I'm typing this from a Pentium III and 512MB RAM. It doesn't do a whole lot, but LGA 1155 will still be capable three years from now. Three years used to be the mark where it was starting to age from being very good (and five years was really old), but that old three year mark seems to have been pushed back to five years now since increases have relatively slowed. My old Core 2 Duo E8600 would still be kicking and, to me, still high end if I still had it. Quote:

SSD was my suggestion And yes LGA1155 will still pack a punch, LGA2011 will pack and even greater punch though that's closer to whatever will be out 3 years from now than LGA1155 will be. That's my point.

The SSD was, yes. That's why I just mentioned the LGA 1155 suggestion. I would have initially suggested an SSD too, but I thought he already had one. There's no point in getting LGA 2011 given it's cost, and the longevity excuse isn't really much of one either. The longevity is more than negated by the extra cost. What he saves will likely be able to get him a new CPU, board, and RAM faster at that point.

Ok fair enough. But you also have to remember though he's coming from Nehalem, not a quad-core, all LGA1155's are quads. Granted that perhaps doesn't change quite so much in real world performance, but he's accustomed to 6 real cores and 6 fake cores so less would at least partially feel like a downgrade. And perhaps he's actually done stuff (encoding) that made use of all 6 cores so he'd notice and perhaps regret the core reduction.

A Core i7 920 is a quad core with Hyper-threading. There's also quad cores with Hyper-threading on LGA 1155.

0_o I always thought Nehalem i7s were hexacores for some odd reason, nevermind that point then. Yeah then a i7-2600K would indeed be his best choice.

I haven't considered a SSD guys because currently with all my software installed my OS drive is 260GB full. I have been avoiding getting one until 512GB SSD's are priced lower.
