Sony pleased about 3DS sales

Nope, not an error.

Quote:
Alot of experts think that with the huge success of the iPhone and tablets, people don't want a 'dedicated handheld gaming device', when something for same price or alot less can do so much more, but still play good games if need be. Both Sony and Nintendo don't think that matters and the market is there, but recently 3DS has been outselling the freshly launched PS Vita more then 6 to 1.

"One of the encouraging things about 3DS' sales performance at Christmas is that it is confounding the naysayers who say that there is no room in the market for a dedicated handheld gaming device," said Sony Computer Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan in an interview with MCV. "And to that extent we were encouraged by how 3DS did over the last month."

3DS when it first launched it was slow to sell, Nintendo even was dropped the price shorter after the launch, but now with hot lineup of games like 'Super Mario', 'Mario Kart' and 'Monster Hunter', they been able to sell in excess of 4 million units in both the USA and Japan.

But again experts think the PS Vita is finding itself in the 'same situation', 'high-launch-price', 'lack of good game titles' leaving it basically dead last in sales so far in Japan, with less then 325,000 units in the first week.

Ryan doesn't think this is indicative of what's set to happen overseas; Vita is set to launch in North America and Europe on February 22 and the system's early struggles in Japan don't mean a thing elsewhere, according to him.

"One of the things we have learnt over a long period of time, is that whether it is PS1, PS2, PSP or PS3, it is dangerous to the point of impossible to take any experience from the Japanese market and try and extrapolate it, and propose upon what will happen in Europe or North America," he told MCV.

"Not withstanding the fact that it is just way too early to make any conclusions. The markets are now just so different, I actually think they are diverging to a greater extent than they were different in the past - if that's even possible."

So overall it seems Sony is happy that the 3DS is doing well now in the marketplace, and Sony thinks they will be able to overcome the 'slow start' out the gate with the NA and EU launches and more 'hotter game titles'. -- Only thing to do is re-visit this subject in a month and half and see how the PS Vita sales are doing then!

I have confidence that the Vita will do well in the long run, to me it already looks like it has more potential than the first PSP and I hope to see it succeed in the coming year. The games will shape the system, just as the software for the 3DS is starting to breathe life into Nintendo camp and with software in the pipeline for the Vita, it should be a great little handheld.

Why do people keep seeing this article the wrong way? The man has a point, 3DS doing great only means there is hope for the console handheld market. Right now it may not be Sony leading but it gives them hopes (and shows the market too) that people are picking handhelds instead of phones to play games~.

Furthermore, while it's true that the PS Vita is selling quite poorly in Japan, why'd people think the same would apply in the west? The japanese and western markets have vastly different tastes. The best selling game of the PSP in Japan is Monster Hunter 3rd Portable and that game wasn't brought overseas because Capcom has seen just how terrible the sales / reception for that game is over the west. The lineup the Vita currently has is madeup of games that'd appeal more to our audience than theirs so just because the Japanese market didn't buy a huge amount of consoles doesn't mean the same will happen in the west (though I am not saying it can't happen, I'm just saying it's not dependant of Japan's performance)~.

As it stands now, the only real issue the Vita is facing is pricing of dedicated memory cards and the system itself. But it's a console that will be launched in the market with more than 5 games that you'll want right from the get go, and that says a lot~.

I'm sure Nintendo is pleased with Vita sales, too.

On a more serious note, it'll be more interesting in the long run. Who cares what the initial numbers are? The 360 had a slow start as well. Look how it ended up.

While I don't care for the Vita, its going to have games that don't work well with Smart phones or Pads, and Sony does have *some* fans left.

Again, while I don't care for Sony, I do like the PSP 3000 I own and built a decent library of games I play on it. I'm still deciding if I'll buy a card and purchase some digital games for my PSP next month. I put ~ $100 into my PSP via digital games and there's probably that much more in games I'd like to own, although I tend to buy ~ $20 of card at a time.

There's a market for the Vita, Sony just has to hope the 3DS (which I want) doesn't take up the market like the DS did last gen.

While I prefer the PSP over the DS Lite I own, I like both systems quite a bit. Both the PSP and DS have "exclusive" games I like.

no surprise, dont you know sony is prototyping several addons for psvita to have a 3d support, there is one that sits on top of the screen and the layers of lcd panels to recreate the same 3d effect in the 3ds....

so in a years time if there is good library of games on psvita, and 3d screen addon then it can be major competition to the 3ds....

also at least in australia the 3ds is a joke, the 3d effect is cool but with the weakest game library ever, i mean that are non remake game I want on it right now and its been out this long...

I mean it had a weak library at 3ds launch but Vita has at least three decent games at launch, and thats not counting the ones that will available for purchase from psn only, and vita seems to be getting more and more online multiplayer games, or games best enjoyed on multiplayer... theres nothing like that on the 3ds
