What's with the "rental" movies having "Special" boxes and DVDs?

Is this some attempt to get people away from buying rental movies? Are they lower in quality?

I've noticed some don't have as nice of a label on the DVD, and the case has "rental" on it.

Do the rental areas get them cheaper than retailers?

Why is there a difference between rental DVDs and non rental DVDs?

Most likely because as far as I know it's illegal to rent out a DVD that isn't a "for rental" version. So the distinction allows the common bloke to report his local rental place if they're renting out the private version. Probably some sort of left over from Video days.

I didn't know it was "illegal" to rent movies in the US, frag, until recently (last year or two) I hadn't seen any movies with the "rental" on it.

Hmm, perhaps it's a local thing here then since every private movie here has a message saying not for rent and who to report to if you rented it.

It always has been illegal to rent out movies... unless you are an authorized rental source.

DVDs with the "rental" label are relatively new though. The only real difference is the DVD serial number and product code. Some of them feature more up to date previews. No difference in quality though.

There's always been a distinction between the version you get from your local rental place and the one you buy in the shops over here.

TFTFY
First sale doctrine
Quote:
The doctrine allows the purchaser to transfer (i.e., sell, lend or give away) a particular lawfully made copy of the copyrighted work without permission once it has been obtained. This means that the copyright holder's rights to control the change of ownership of a particular copy ends once ownership of that copy has passed to someone else, as long as the copy itself is not an infringing copy.
Obviously doesn't apply to other countries like expensive internet land.
These rental versions lack extras in attempt to get you to buy them instead.
