Arrow What if pc left on for over years?

my old system went dead because the ram went bad on its own (i dont know how). I started getting random bsod's and crc errors. I was running on dual channel ddr2 2gb and both were defective ( i tested it on another pc). I just wonder it went bad because of the way i used it, as i bought that old rig in 2005 and i used to run it 24/7 (used around 10 hours a day for heavy gaming and left it idle with utorrent for downloads rest of the time or simply idle). I had power backups so i didnt let it off on its own ever. Do you think not turning it off causes this type of problem?

No.

The system and its hardware were 6 years old. Besides relative "old" age, electronics can just "go bad" and there's no way to ever know for sure if your old rig would have lasted longer if you had occasionally shut it down or put it in sleep mode. Even if you gave it more downtime than uptime, there's also still no guarantee that it could have lasted longer.

I know people that barely use their computers that incur relatively frequent hardware failures.

Every server you connect to on the internet is a computer that's running 24/7. ಠ_ಠ

Well, something naturally has a bigger chance of faulting if it is running versus not running (though other variables apply). However, it's not like it was because it was left on that it faulted. That may have brought that failure sooner, but not directly. Whatever failed, simply failed.

It depends on the parts themselves, and luck even (low quality stuff can last, good quality stuff can fail). Maintenance comes into play as well (for example, was it ever cleaned?). As mentioned, servers run all of the time. However, they do fail as well. Most of them simply have backup systems (Like RAID in the case of drives) in place, and replacements are often done quickly. Again, that's down to maintenance.

Been running close to 24/7 for almost 3 years and no issues yet. I highly doubt I'll make it far past 4 years without something dying though. Not too much of an issue though since for most people the upgrade cycle is at least every 3 years.

Inadequate cooling, collection of dust, mechanical parts, power supplies . all contribute to the death of a pc.

well thanks for that now i understand quite well.. i should just think like it was a kinda 'lifespan' of my system and after that it went off.. and still running continuously for 5 years without any hardware failures (though some crashes happened) was my luck! And i tested, my pentium d e2220 still works perfectly, so does mobo but it is the ram which died.

I keep it on 24/7 aside from shutting it down at the beginning of each week; so far I've kept these PCs on for nearly three years and haven't had any issues.

At the store I work at, our cash registers are computers running XP, and they're on 24/7, even though we're open "only" 17 hours a day, 6 days a week.
(Random fact, the only way we can actually restart it is by forcefully cutting power, then starting them again)

As the others said, the pc didn't die because it was on all the time.
