Little do you know, that a business would only put up such a sign if they thought there was more value in the ps3.

Pretty decent deal though, considering a 250gig Xbox 360 costs far more than you'd generally get for a PS3 trade-in.

Would be ironic if a bunch of people took advantage of this deal, only for XBL to go down for a long period of time.

Few gamers will be feeling sorry for Sony and the mess caused with this PSN hacking debacle. But if you were just annoyed by what has happened, be prepared to now start getting a bit angry.

Dr. Gene Spafford, CERIAS Fellow and professor of Computer Science at Purdue University, has been talking at a hearing about the PSN security breach held by the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade. He explained that independent security experts monitor Sony’s systems such as PSN, Qriocity, and SOE and report in an open forum Sony employees view about anything they find.

Those security experts apparently reported some major failings with Sony’s servers some three months before the April 17 hack occurred. These weren’t small issues, they are blatant oversights and laziness on the part of Sony’s engineering team.

The issue reported was the fact Sony was running PSN on a server that had an outdated version of Apache and no firewall in place. That meant any vulnerabilities known about for that version of Apache, and patched in more up-to-date releases, were easy to take advantage of. With no firewall in place too, the hacker probably had a very easy time of it.

We don’t know what’s worse here, the fact Sony engineers ran such an unsecure system, or that they knowingly ignored being called out on it be some security experts in a forum. Whatever the case, that $1 billion PSN lawsuit in Canada just got some fresh ammunition to use in court.

As for Sony, they were invited to attend the hearing, but declined and sent a letter instead explaining how their systems will be much more secure in future.

Matthew’s Opinion
This is one of the problems of entrusting your most personal of details to a service. That data is only as safe as the people who are in control of the servers it is stored on.

We already knew Sony had messed up badly, but it now looks as though this breach didn’t even require a sophisticated hack. The server/s were open for anyone to have a go at gaining access.

If there is an evidence trail of these reports being made about outdated software and security being turned off, then you can bet the next hearing won’t see Sony get an invite, they’ll be forced to explain themselves and be in line for some serious punishment.

Hackers plan a 3rd attack on Sony

Exclusive: Third attack against Sony planned | Circuit Breaker - CNET News

A group of hackers says it is planning another wave of cyberattacks against Sony in retaliation for its handling of the PlayStation Network breach.

An observer of the Internet Relay Chat channel used by the hackers told CNET today that a third major attack is planned this weekend against Sony's Web site. The people involved plan to publicize all or some of the information they are able to copy from Sony's servers, which could include customer names, credit card numbers, and addresses, according to the source. The hackers claim they currently have access to some of Sony's servers.

Should the planned attack succeed, it would be the latest blow in a series of devastating security breaches of Sony's servers over the past month. The failure of Sony's server security has ignited investigations by the FBI, the Department of Justice, Congress, and the New York State Attorney General, a well as data security and privacy authorities in the U.K., Canada, and Taiwan.

Several weeks ago the hacker group known as Anonymous targeted several Sony Web sites, including Sony.com and SonyStyle.com, with a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack in retaliation for what its members saw as Sony's unfair legal action against hacker George Hotz. Two weeks ago Sony's PlayStation Network, along with its Qriocity service and Sony Online, were the target of an attack that exposed the personal information of more than 100 million Sony customers. Sony was forced to shut down PSN, Qriocity, and Sony Online, and is currently working to bring them back online after rebuilding the security of its servers.

Sony says it doesn't know who orchestrated what it's calling a "highly sophisticated, planned" attack, but it has dropped hints that the group Anonymous is involved. Kazuo Hirai, chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment, told a Congressional subcommittee in a letter yesterday that the intruders on its servers planted a file named "Anonymous" containing the statement "We are Legion," part of the group's tagline.

Anonymous issued a statement yesterday denying it was involved in the PSN breach. "While we are a distributed and decentralized group, our 'leadership' does not condone credit card theft," the statement said.

Now it seems the same group of hackers that was able to infiltrate the PSN servers is planning to hit back against Sony.

Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
lol it can.

Psshhh! Shows what you know! My PC can't play any current game. Period.

But at least there's more people playing old-ass PC games online than playing PS3 online. Word!

I'll get it later.

usually hacks on services used by people like psn aren't something to be happy about but honestly i feel no sorry for Sony because even if they are the victim as well as the users they were the ones going bully on hackers and putting themselves in the line of fire... i guess everyone with a working brain knows what happen if you put yourself in the line of fire so i guess the "you get what you derseve" applies here.

What did I say about dragging a*ses and not trying to restore service?

A.k.a.: we don't know when we are done "fixing" it yet. Or a.k.a. we really didn't try to fix it, but we had to make it look like we were focusing on that and not on dodging legal balls.
