Stop buying Samsung

Apparently, Samsung has gotten caught pants down deliberately installing spying software on the laptops it sells.

- Samsung Installing Keyloggers on its Laptops? > Comments
- Samsung installs keylogger on its laptop computers
- Samsung responds to installation of keylogger on its laptop computers

Quote:
Hearkening back to the Sony Rootkit brouhaha from a few years ago, a security researcher is claiming in a Network World article that he detected factory-installed keyloggers in two brand new Samsung Laptops. Samsung has made no official response, but a tech support supervisor contacted by the author said that the keystroke logging software was installed by Samsung to "monitor the performance of the machine and to find out how it is being used."

This is just a false alarm. Just take a look at the updated message in the third link that you posted.

You should format the harddrive if you get a pre-installed OS on the computer anyway.
Usually way too much bloatware.

Also, didn't really think Samsung made laptops.
Only cared for their display devices.

And this.

First thing I do with a laptop is format it, partition the hdd my way and install the OS myself as well as programs.

I also am pretty happy with my Samsung TV and Samsung PC monitor

Yeah. I've never seen anyone using their laptops. Currently I have 0 products from Samsung. A friend of mine is dreaming about an old model of Samsung mobile phone.

Like here? Samsung does install Carrier IQ on its androids (its referred to as "Mobile Service Intelligence")
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11763089

Pre-installed OSes are nothing that should be trusted. Spyware should be the least of worries, if you think about it. Mind you, they usually never preinstall pre-activated highly useful stuff like OS-independant theft recovery software.

The only use I have of Samsung is CD/DVD drives and Ram. Nothing more, nothing less.

Either way, this clever tactic can be used by big corporations as well as the government to invade your privacy (once again, in the name of security) and easily label you as a terrorist if they don't like you giving them the right to throw you in a concentration camp never to be seen again (at least in the US they can). That's IF they wanted to do so.

Some of you might say "It's nothing to worry about; and if you aren't doing anything wrong, what's the big deal?". Simply put, I don't like being spied on.

Indeed. I always download a clean bloatless version of whatever version of Windows came with the PC and do a fresh install using the included serial number. Hell, since most OEM PCs come horribly out of date as far as updates go, half of the time it's quicker to just download a Windows ISO with the latest updates slip-screened in already.

Spoiler:

Downloading a piece of software that you own a valid serial number to has been discussed here before, and hasn't been an issue, so don't ride my ass about downloading a copy of Windows, k?

I do that as well, the PCs/laps with pre-installed OSes don't usually come with installation discs anyway, just some crappy recovery **** which does no good.

Or even worse yet, when they include no discs at all and have the recovery files on a separate partition. Which of course is useless if you ever decide to replace the harddrive due to failure or otherwise. (Not to mention, it wastes space. My old Acer craptop had 20GB of it's 80GB harddrive partitioned for recovery...)

That still wouldnt explain why the samsung official that was contacted told the researcher that samsung does indeed install and use loggers on its laptops for intelligence gathering about its customers' behaviour.

Spoiler:

You pay for the "luxury" of using the software, not the cd itself.
Many anti-piracy people have a problem understanding this.
