Question Windows 7 Service Pack 1

Well i remember the days when Service Packs for XP were released, it was really a fuss all around.
But for 7, it's out already, and i hardly saw any news about it.

Should i just install it? Any reported problems?
Coz i use it in both my desktop and laptop.

It's a consolidation of all of the patches thus far as far as I know. If you click Windows Update more than once a month for the past year or so, you're fine without the service pack.

I have 7 SP1 installed. It's more than a consolidation of patches. What it adds, though, I'm not sure. Doesn't seem to be anything critical.

Windows 7 SP1 does have a few changes, go here and dl the .doc file for notable changes.

best fix was an update for devices losing hdmi audio connection after a reboot.

Ah, thanks, Yelo.

That was the fix I've been waiting for. My HTPC build is finally complete.

Happened to me once. A full shutdown fixed it.

I can't install the blasted thing. I only have 5GB free of the 9GB it wants, being the WinSxS directory what takes most of the space on that drive (25GB). =S

Seriously!? 5GB!? By that point, it's FAR been time for a new hard drive. I'm down to ~287GB free on my primary drive and I am starting to think of more and/or larger drives. I do have an empty one, so between then and now, I'll likely move my Steam install over to that or something, as it's taking up 261GB of what is taken. I'd never let it get nearly that low though.

There's 5GB free on my Windows install drive. I have a 1TB drive for Games/Stuff, that's at 80% usage. Then, I have another drive for Linux and whatnots.

I'll just slipstream the SP1 with the install DVD, then do a reinstall with it.

The point wasn't how much space you have total. The point was, with your free space on your primary drive that low, it's time to rethink the setup.

I have two 640 drives for data (one is for data, the other is a duplicate of it for backup which I unhook except for when I'm backing up, which is roughly weekly).

A third 640GB drive is my OS drive. I... just have it simple, so all my installed stuff is there too. I have 287GB free of 596GB. So, roughly/nearly half of my drive is used. Steam takes a good chunk (read as, most) of that used space.

My fourth and last 640GB drive has no major role. It had Windows XP on it when I used it, but I also use it for FRAPS recordings and other miscellaneous things. It's mostly unused though. I'll probably toss Steam and it's games on there at some point.

The point is, you're at 5GB free, so it's time to start rethinking your setup, be it the partition setup if the drive is partitioned, a new drive altogether, or whatever. If you have to slipstream a disc and reinstall Windows to install a service pack, you may as well get this set since you're reinstalling anyway. A full drive often has reduced performance as well.

Dang how many steam games do you have PG? Perosnaly I only have around 25 gigs free on my 250 gig harddrive here on my main pc. Ive got a lot of stored on a external 500 gig tho and thats got 202 gigs free. I dont have that many games installed most I have is like 5 right now if that. and most of them are less then 4 gigs each except for Neverwinter nights 1 and 2 and those take up a lot of space once you start installing mods to them. The biggest harddirve I own is the 500 gig external the rest are only 250 or smaller. my htpc has an 160 gig hdd along iwth a 250 gig hdd that has xp and a another 80 gig that has linux. the main os is vista right now tho.

I have my reasons to keep the drive for its purpose, as you could've guessed. I had over 25GB free on it with all the needed programs installed and with no change ever since (restore and shadowcopies disabled). However, the winsxs directory has grown over 20GB since then, for whatever reason, and complicated things. Anyhow, the tradeoff of a new drive vs reinstalling is not that bad in my case.

I had issues installing the service pack through windows update on a laptop. So I had to download it from microsft.com to get it to install. other then that there hasnt been any issues. I had no issues running it on my desktop.

I hope one of these updates in SP1 fixes the intermittent wireless issues.

And my Velociraptor has 40gb free on my primary drive.....5 gb is pushing it. (The drive has to work harder when saturated) like that. it's best to keep an OS drive lightly loaded (NTFS partitions writes the MBR and vial system files closer to the center of the platter, the part least likely to be damaged in any consequence.

Yeah, but... 5GB? 1TB drives have been cheap for a long time now. I know that's not necessarily reason to just have to get one itself, but if you're that bad on space, it is. Being down to 25GB alone means it's time (especially if the drive itself is large to begin with).

WinSXS is the Windows side by side directory. You can read up on it here.

The Secret Of Windows 7 / Vista Winsxs Folder.

Reinstalling will shave it down again, but it'll grow again in due time.

No, there is some other stuff too, but for most people, it isn't major or even anything that would matter. I'm holding off for now (not of fear or anything, namely because I keep myself updated anyway).
