PS3 DRM To Be Implemented Shortly

Source - PS3 DRM To Be Implemented Shortly

Quote:

It is rumored that Sony is planning on implementing serial keys with all new Blu-ray discs on the PlayStation 3. This would be a similar method to how PC games work currently. These keys would lock to a specific game which means that this new functionality could cripple the PS3 used games market as well. If implemented this would be the first legitimate attempt at a DRM on consoles.

There are a lot of great things that the DRM can do for developers and publishers. It allows them to keep more money from the games that they sell legitimately. Then again as a consumer, the thought of knowing that my games have zero trade in value kind of stinks.
Sounds like goodbye to the second hand market. What is your opinion on this? (Although I bet I can guess)

Try my Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil 6 or Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition Playstation button mods!
As far as handhelds go, well, I get the Nintendo one.
Because I'm not an idiot.

....

my opinion on this is perfectly clear already so i wont waste my time ranting about it again.

but if they do this and destroy the used game market for there games i refuse to buy any sony produced goods again. i know the way i said it sounds childish, but to be honest that's the only reasonable course of action i can follow in this situation.

Considering its nothing but a rumor right now. They would be stupid to implement this considering it would ruin the used games market and you wouldnt be able to sell those sucky games that grandma got you for x-mas eaither.

They dont get any money from the used game market, so id be hard pressed to find a reason they would care about it.

Exactly, but it could also give them the possibility of making money out of the second hand market (Pay to have the game re-activated again)

I have ZERO issue with a serial key system. Been using it on PC for my PC computing life and I've had no trouble.

DRM and serial keys? WTF?

I can life with EA serial keys stuff but not with this. They should use serial keys for online gaming and make it optional (if you bought a used copy, you can buy the serial key for it via PSN)

Sony isnt doing its reputation any good. All anyone will do is go to its competitors who would allow non-DRM enabled games to be played, and Sony will have to concede it no longer leads the gaming industry like it did with its first console.

This should be as easy to spoof as with regular Bluray movies using the highest security profile available.

Businesses only see it from their (a money) perspective, so why not? It's no different. Of course they're going to see it that way.

I wouldn't worry about this, til it actually happens, to see what's it all about.

You'll receive one of five classic RPGs to choose from: Gothic 2 Gold, Realms of Arkania 1 + 2, Realms of Arkania 3, Divine Divinity, and Beyond Divinity, the manual (unsurprisingly), a 200 pages digital artbook, the full in-game soundtrack, papercraft figures, guide, maps, letters, trailers, developer diaries, gameplay footage, interviews and "making of" exclusive video.

This would be pointless as anyone playing on a hacked system would bypass the drm anyway.

This rumor is a rumor.

Whatever Sony does i don't care anymore because the PS3 its actually the last System i bought from a company that won a case in USA with the argument that buyers can't do whatever they want with the consoles they purchased... as the recent win against Geohot shows and also as stated by the EFF:

Quote:
the EFF believes a ruling for Sony threatens any tinkerer that decides to pop the case of his/her electronic devices. Sony argues that the hackers violated the agreement of the PlayStation Network, though the hackers claim they never signed up. In the EFF's view, this is Sony saying it's illegal and a crime "for users to access their own computer in a way that Sony doesn't like." It says a "terms of use" agreement shouldn't give Sony total control over the devices people buy with threat of criminal punishment.
Because of the highlighted part Sony can f*** themselves and put there stupid idealism and devices in there a**e* for what i care but i will not buy any further machine from such a stupid company anymore. they are probably right about piracy and i understand there moves... however suing someone with such arguments its a dirty move and also shows how low they are this days.

Meh. I'll buy Sony as long as they're keeping the good devs. That's all I care about in the end. There are many things in my life worth taking a stand over, this isn't really one of them.
