Quick android app recommendation.

Tasker is awesome.
Total Automation.

Blown away by some profiles.

EX: Turn on wifi when you are at work, put on silent mode, tell you the weather anytime you like and many many more.
It's a geek's dream app.

Another great app is LBE privacy guard.
Ever felt affraid of your privacy with all those apps, don't be.
With LBE you can disable access to any app to your ID, Contacts, etc.

It's ****ing annoying that a game is asking for your ID and call records.
Give the finger with LBE to all those data miners.

android's a bit scary like that anyways.
Chinese GO Dev Team makes awesome apps (launchers, custom keyboards, etc.), but who can assure me that they're not acquiring a lot of user data?

Hm... came across an Xperia Play 4G (4G version is newer) today for a pretty good price.

What can I say? My qualms with the original version are gone. Screen is bright (very much so), sound is crisp and super loud, and the phone is a lot smoother than the original. They must have obtained some magical dusts from Apple's employees.

On a more serious note, I think it's quite possible that I'm liking this phone...

Yeah Android is scary in that regard.

I use ADWLauncherEX.
Grabbed it for 0.10 last week.

I got it. Awesome little retro gaming system. PSX emulation is bugged in some of the games I want to play (noooooooooo!), but GBA emulation and the rest is more awesome than the PSP Go. Definitely a good tradeoff.

Plus the screen is huge! And I don't have to put my fingers on it.

Now my only complaint is that the "analog sticks" are next to worthless.

Now to figure out why this device is so different from the original Xperia Play. It was like Sony made a completely different phone just for AT&T. The color is also more attractive (dark blue).

Ugh...I hate american network exclusive phones. Those networks should seriously get over themselves.

They phone can be unlocked, though. The cost of a subsidized phone + unlock code is < factory unlocked phone if you're already in the US.

It's insane how expensive some unlocked phones can be. Take the Galaxy Nexus for example. $799!

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-I9250-.../dp/B005ZEF01A

On contract, the thing is like $299.

Doesn't help if it's non-GSM which those phones often are.

You're confusing CDMA phones with GSM phones. CDMA carriers have exclusive phones regardless of which part of the world they are. In the US, it's Verizon and Sprint that are the two major players. CDMA phones use a completely different radio and no SIM at all.

The Xperia Play 4G is an AT&T phone, so it's still GSM, and can be unlocked.

Perhaps this is Sony taking the Ericsson out of the PLAY then?

Nah. It happened before the merge. Either I got a rare batch, or this one flew under the radar. Makes sense, though, because AT&T US is the only company in the entire world that sells it.

Now I just have to wait until next month to start using it... My billing cycle just ended last week right before I got the phone.

Beauty of Android is you can unlock them way easier than iPhones.

My GS2 is the AT&T i777 version, couldn't pick the Sprint because it was cdma and the T-Mobile uses a Qualcomm chipset, way slower than Exynos, and the Skyrocket uses Qualcomm too.

So one hour after I got my i777 I unlocked it free with an app from the Market.

Now I'm thinking of getting a class 10 Microsdhc card.
Best price I can find is 50bucks for 32gb samsung class 10.
At least they are reliable, the reviews say they perform very good.
Not sure yet.

ADWLauncher is pretty cool... don't really need it for my phone (HTC) since it has Sense (and I quite like that), but it could be nice for my tablet, which runs a pretty much vanilla Android version.

Yeah I'm using it on my GS2 and my Touchpad.
A lot of options and smooth animations.

Shameless plug for new iPhone 4 back! But that aside, the two ain't too different size-wise. The Play is 50% thicker, but the iPhone 4 is deadly thin anyways.
