Comparison between gts450 and gts250?

Sence the gts450 is a new card i cant seem to find much in way of comparing it to the gts250 of which i have. i was wondering if they would perform similarly or what sence they are about the same price with the gts460 only being like $10 more and it has directx11 as well. and how would the gts 450 compare to the 460 as well sence the 460 is $100 more in some cases. im a little torn between the 450 and the 40 right now with trying to save as much as i can on my next pc purchase. and if i go the 450 route i will spend less then $1k on an intel i5 system compared to the $1200 i was looking at before.

The GTS250 is essentially a 9800GTX+ which is essentially an improved 9800GTX, which I believe is similar to the 8800GTS 512MB. Essentially, it's the evolved 8800GT though. The GT 240 (GDDR5 variants only, the GDDR3 were much weaker) is essentially a 9600GT (sometimes even performs worse), which itself sits below the 8800GT. Here's a rough draft.

9500GT > GT 220 > GT 240 GDDR5/9600GT > 8800GT/9800GT > 8800GTS 512MB/9800GTX > 9800GTX+/GTS 250 > GTX 260 (192) > GTX260 (216)

Now, with the GeForce 4 series coming into play, I don't know how much higher the GTS 450 is than these (I'd wager it's probably around a GTX 260 (216) performance-wise?), but the GTX 460 (don't know about the GTS 460) is a whole good longshot higher than any of them. I was considering upgrading to it from my current 8800GT.

That being said, the GTS 450 is probably not as big a jump, especially from a GTS 250. I'd check and see exactly how much higher it is, because in my opinion, it's not worth upgrading unless the jump is big enough, and it might not be.

not enough of a jump indeed...then again my standards for a sufficient jump are pretty high...

I'd say the GTS450 is probably around HD5770 levels, sometimes higher, probably a little more frequently a little lower. It's a definitely a choice for the budget conscious builder, especially one that prefers nVidia to ATi.

the GTS 450 is also my target card, comin from a 9600GT. Prolly my last upgrade on my current aging system before a complete overhaul.
GeForce GTS 450 im Test - NVIDIA präsentiert den leisen "Sniper" - Crysis Warhead (Seite 27) - Tests bei HardTecs4U

The GTS 450 is roughly similar or faster in some situations compared to the GTS 250/9800GTX+/HD 5750. The HD 5770 is mostly faster but there are times that it overtakes it as well.
Also, just like the GTX 460, the GTS 450 overclocks like a monster. Coming from the default 783/1566/3600 to a staggering 970+/2000+/4500+ on some cases. Most if not all GTS 450 cards are capable of this.

TDP on default clocks of the GTS 450 is similar to the 9600GT/9800GT/5770 (around 100W) wherein the GTS 250 has a TDP near 150W

Theres a rumor that it has a bigger brother on the same class named GTS 455 in which is listed on the recent drivers but no info on it yet...

OK let's try to tab things...

- On stock, the GT450 can easily match and beat the Radeon 5750.
- On rare occasions, it can match and beat the Radeon 5770.
- The Radeon 5770 can be a lot faster than the GTS450 because it's more overclockable.

So on direct comparisons....

9800GTX+ = GTS250
Radeon 4870 > GTS250
Radeon 4870 = Radeon 5770

I remember review sites usually comparing it to the Radeon 5750 and the 5770. Try using Google to search about it.

IMO the 450 can barely beat a 5750

I would rather buy a 460 for a bit more

I'm totally with you that a 460 is a the better choice, but the premium over the 450 isn't as light everywhere.

Almost the same performance.
You will not be upgrading anything but compatibility, at most is perhaps a 6% increase between them.

Save up more and buy a midrange card. 460 minimum.

From the reviews I've seen, the GTS 450 seems to perform between HD 5750 and HD 5770. With the HD 5770 often going on sale for $130-ish, though, it's a bit hard to go for the GTS 450. There's also the GTX 460 768MB. While it's not quite as nice as the GTX 460 1GB, I've seen it go for as low as $150 after instant coupons.

Maybe wait till November when ATi AMD, supposedly, release the new 6K lineup, with the possibility of price reduction for 5K and Nvidia 4 series?

I don't think there will be price cuts though. People still pay top price for ATi.

Hmm, ATI AMD is supposed to be releasing the mid-range HD 67xx models first. Presumably, they'd be occupying the $120~180 bracket that the current cards occupy which probably explains why the price of HD 5770 frequently drops down to HD 5750 territory.

SAPPHIRE 100284L Radeon HD 5750 1GB 128-bit GDDR5, $130 ($115 after rebate) + $7 ship
SAPPHIRE 100283-3L Radeon HD 5770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5, $140 ($125 after rebate) + free ship

Also, people pay top price for NVIDIA (same way people pay top price for Intel). ATI AMD is usually the value or price/performance option.

ATI prices have done nothing but go up, well above the release retail price and have stayed at that level.

The lower prices are inter-brand competition and not a reflection of anything internal from amdati. The barts parts will be first, cayman in November.

Prices will be lower than the current generation vs performance but not where you imagine. 5850 performance for the price of a 460 and 6870 performance for the price of a 5850. Whilst nvidia is spreading fud at every point of amd speculation to jilt sales to amd, the reality is that they are month behind of releasing a retaliation to the 6 series and this is all marketing air.

in our place despite the arrival of the GST 450, 5750 and 5770 prices are still pretty high, much higher than the GTS 450 (in our currency at least it amounts to 4 digits), the 450 though has dropped in price again recently here.
