will epsxe ever be perfect?

I remember when epsxe came out over 15 years ago. It was a fantastic breakthru in emulation. But in all honesty, the amount of improvements to the emu in regards to performance and compatibility has not really been significant. Do you guys ever foresee a time when epsxe will run all Playstation games pretty much perfectly and at full speed?

It runs full speed in everything I've ever thrown at it and "perfect" is highly subjective in emulation. Can you be more specific?

if by perfect you mean with no problems on any hardware configuration then no, perfect is nearly impossible. i doubt any psx emulator can achive this. if you want perfect use a real playstation.

No. All in all, even just updates might never happen again.
Pete kept it alive with his excellent plugins, but that's as far as improvements in 'epsxe' could go, with a refactoring or source release.

Hardware-accelerated software rendering. pSX is heading to that 'perfection' (MAME far too slow).

Thanks for the replies and explanation guys. Very insightful

Oh well it's a bit unfortunate. From what you've read and heard, has "pSX" suffered the same fate? That too is an emu I have not seen updates for in a very long time.

The thing that concerns me the most, is the fear of seeing PCSX2 and other PS2 emulators go down the same road. PCSX2 is a great emu, but let's face it, it too is becoming quite long in the tooth with having been released for over two years now, and there are still many many many ps2 games that either run too slow or don't run at all.

Do you guys suspect PCSX2 development will eventually kick the bucket as well?

I guess I have come to the realization that 3D emulation is a LOT harder to perfect that 2D. 90% of all 2D emulators I know about run their games pretty much perfectly. ZSNES, Kega Fusion, Final Burn Alpha, WinUAE, you name it.

Thoughts? Opinions?

?
Well, there are nearly daily releases of the PCSX2 SVN's. The developement never stopped, but the public release will need its time

...I'll presume you did not try PCSX2 again since 2 years ago.
Try the latest beta and see if 'many games' still do not run, or as slowly.

No. Given how radical the 1.14 'will' be, delays are very understandable. It's also supposed to bring working PS2 emulation on the table (with reasonable compatibility), as well as a functioning Mac port PS1 fans were clamoring for since ages by now (PCSX not performing all that good on Mac), among others.

Wow I was unaware of these developments. Thanks a bunch for the detailed clarification Hard core Rikki and Dark Mind.

Rikki, are graphical enhancements ala epsxe on the table as well for the pSX 1.14 as far as you know?

No, pSX specifically shuns graphic enhancements (like antialisaing). It aims to look as much as the real console output after all.

It would be nice to have a much much more efficient netplay regimen for playing epsxe online with others. Sadly on my modem, it just doesn't seem quite fit for it. A lot of emus developers are really good, but I just have current focus on the netplay aspect. Some, not all of the time games can be much fun online than playing by yourself and it just seems programmers focus on too much of the movies, and high definition crap I always hear. I have to see mupen 64 ++ beta has really put out in netplay. I think epsxe also needs to go down that road when netplay is a lot more function -able for people that don't have as much internet speed as the other people...like....like me.
