Why does Assassins Creed 2 have bad framerate on my PC?

When I'm running around in closed environments the game is rock solid at 60fps, but when I'm walking around the city streets the game drops to around 27/30 fps. I even lowered all the graphic settings to its absolute lowest and it still has the same bad frame rate? I turned V-sync on and off, still no difference.

My PC:
AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition
ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB Crossfired (Catalyst 10.3)
Corsair 4GB DDR2
Corsair 850w TX series power supply
Windows Vista Ultimate
(2) 320 GB hard drives

It's quite a bad port actually, I think it might be highly CPU limited and doesn't make proper use of quadcores. I hardly noticed any impact when my GPU was running at 600 / 300, instead of the regular 775 / 900 MHz (core / memory). It simply behaves in a weird way and should perform better. I like the engine for what it shows me and how it can display so many people and a huge area in one go, but on the other hand, back in 2000 we got Shenmue... Given the amount of processing power we have nowadays compared to the Dreamcast, it's ridiculous we're still dealing with this amount of popup and the same framerate.

Anyway, seeing how you're running the game with a Phenom II at 3.0 GHz, it doesn't surprise me that you're seeing similar results. Perhaps overclocking will give you a better performance? Most likely your Crossfire isn't helping, as the game doesn't really push the GPU.

They are spending too much resources on the DRM, none is left for the game itself.

this is the funny thing, because ACII was meant to be all about scheduling and multithreading.

Fail.....

My guess goes to your Cpu speed. Try overclocking it.

my guess its crossfire related , try to disable it , the game could be not so compatible with CF (not the only one BTW)

it plays good on my 5770 4AA and Full HD res ,and one of your cards can beat mine .
still the GFX suck ass , very bad sequel , the texture are a little sharper than the original and so is the lighting , but shadows can be dumb sometimes and the oily shader for the skin isn't very realistic

Nah, it's at best, a "decent" port, but by no means a great one.

He needs more Mhz. AC2 doesn't improve much on Quad Cores and by video card optimization is as good as GTA4. (haha)
