Jerky shifting in a 1993 Dodge Intrepid
I'm working on this 1993 Dodge Intrepid - Automatic Transmission, 200k miles 3.3L V6, it has a problem where there is a noticeable jerk between first and second, and on occasion between second and third. It only does this sometimes, and other times it shifts smoothly like it should. All the most obvious problems I checked over, fluid levels, engine mounts, etc, so what should I check next? I don't think the transmission is entirely shot because after it shifts, it's fine, and after sometimes it doesn't even shift hard. I'm thinking it could possibly be a sensor or something, but I'm not sure where to begin really. Any ideas? Surprisingly though, despite American cars being not being known to run great by 200k, other than the shifting problem this thing runs fine.

Check the throttle body and the throttle hookup in general. If that's not it, the transmission is simply shot. I doubt it is the ECU. It also could be the mass air sensor, put that's far out..

I was told to check the fuel pump and filter, a guy told me that he had a similar problem and it was actually a fuel supply issue. I guess it's not impossible since the fuel pump in it is pretty new and could possibly be poorly installed. Though it seems a bit unlikely.

Drained the tranny fluid and changed the filter, and the jerkiness is no longer as rough, but it's still there. I'm thinking there is some kind of foreign substance in the tranny.

Did you just drop the tranny pan, or did you do a tranny flush? If you only dropped the pan then you only got about 30% of the old fluid out of there. Since ATF is basically hydraulic fluid, you're running with 70% old hydraulic fluid. edit: I realize this is late, but only by a couple months. Could still be relevant. |

However, I threw a bottle of transmission treatment into it, and it shifts fine now, heh. Probably only a temporary fix, so we're going to look through a few junkyards to see if we can't find a good tranny for it. I remember the last time I was at U pull it they had at least seven or eight 92-93-94 Dodge Intrepids, so at least one of them has to have a good tranny.

Why not sell the car now is seemingly perfect condition and profit?

Second, even in perfect condition, the blue book value of that care is only $1000 or so, so even if he sells it, he won't make enough for a decent down payment on another car.
