Is Microsoft cutting backwards compatibility on the 360?

I heard the newer 360 Elites can't play XBOX games, is that true?

I'm hoping someone was just misinformed.

In my experience, any original XBOX game supported by the 360 requires an update from XBOX LIVE to be playable. As far as I know, there is no real difference between the Elite, Arcade, etc, these are just the names given to the "packages" being sold in stores (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). But since MS is now cutting support on Live for the original XBOX, any games you might have, but have not updated your 360 for will not be playable, but you still have a little time to get the updates.

But the live support they are cutting of is for playing online, offline games should be unaffected if it's only a patch.

I think the only thing you'll have to worry about is the content that's only usable online. I forgot which games are like that.
