nVidia's GT300 series to be a rebrand?

And once again, another round of rebrands for nVidia. What probably was to be expected as their Fermi will be released as the 400 series, is now kind of confirmed.

The GT330 was spot in a machine sold by Aldi. Inquiring about the GPU it turned out to be a 8800GS / 9600GSO on 55nm.

Just a headsup, if you want to buy a new GPU, wait for the 400 series, or at least do some research before getting a 300 series nVidia GPU.

Don't know why. I still can't figure out why people make such a huge deal over re-branding.

Lamborghini took the Gallardo, updated the shape, installed the Lamborghini LM002 engine in it and called it the Reventon

Awesome car. Dream car.

Spoiler:
This is not true, the LM002 was a horrible offroad car from 1986, but you didn't know that.

Just like a customer wouldn't know what a G92 is and why it is in a product that should have a new revision of a G200 engine.

In reality, selling old stock with a new name and without the performance to match is ALL nvidia has done for 10 months.

It doesn't push progress, it pushes marketing.

Aldi and Lidl are two different companies, both are German and both are cheap though.

That ^

OEMS will pick it up anyway as they can market as "the latest nVidia series" and nVidia can ask more money for it as it's the latest model. Meanwhile the competitor who's putting effort into at least updating its catalog won't see its marketshare increase in the way it should if it were judged on the quality of its products.

Another point is that it simply makes the market less transparent. And even though ATi isn't completely sin-free either, like Squall pointed out in another thread. Nowadays its numbering system at least makes it very clear when we deal with newer technology, and which GPU is faster than the other.

Not always.

The first batch of 9800GT cards were literally 8800GT with a different box.
Second batch of 9800GT had a die shrink.

Both batches had a higher price on the street.

Name implies a perfomance increase, the naming was trickery.

Seen this coming with the "Fermi will be GT4XX series" news, though I recall seeing some site report that GT3XX will have DX10.1, guess not.

Guys you haven't seen the laptop counterparts.

They are almost always a generation behind of the one they market. ex: gt260m is like a 9800gt.

I would really like to see Ati's mobile cards, based on benchmarks performance is almost like desktop counterparts.

The red-side also has some rebrand on the very low HD5's: Rebranding of Mobility HD5145 and 5165
For other Mobility cards: AMD Graphics for Notebook PCs. I didn't know there were some HD58xx for Notebooks. O_O

So? Who, seriously, is going to go update their card just because the model number went up? No one. People will at least look at performance figures before deciding.

People are picking on nvidia for something that's been done for ages.

I actually endorse it. Folks got fed up on cheap 'mr. muscles' and solid 'bang for buck'.
When they see a product with a new brand, cheap (perhaps not so cheap as the old real mr. muscle) and with a good brand, they go for it because they might get exactly the performance promised by the number (330 compared with 295 promises 12% performance gain). Instead they get a cheap sobering experience, another chance to be pleasantly supprised, a chance to get happier (which is hard if one is happy) and most important they might buy another card soon which is good for the company (the most important thing).
